This laptop privacy screen claims to reduce blue light by 98% without impacting the color, somehow I have my doubts 🤔

It's kinda fascinating how fast "ai" has replaced "cgi" as a term people just use when they think something is fake?

Say that I know in general terms what an ECS (Entity-Component-System) does but I have never used one (unless classic Unity counts) (it doesn't). I'm making a small game in Rust. Is there anything an ECS library will get me, any reason to adopt one, that I won't just get from just making a big array of variants with one variant for each of my actor types?

nota,
@nota@chaos.social avatar

@mcc I think the main thing it gets you is "free", performant object soup without a ton of lifetime wrangling. I think that's one major reason apart from hype that they are so popular in rust.

nota,
@nota@chaos.social avatar

@mcc @jlfischer That does solve part of the problem, but it doesn't give you stuff like arena/generational allocation for transient objects, change detection, a good concurrency story, etc. I haven't tried any of the other ones, but at least the bevy ECS is just an incredibly capable data structure with a lot of unsafe code that is probably useful for most games, even if you don't use the query parts too much. But it is in constant flux, so I'm not sure if I can recommend that particular one.

nota,
@nota@chaos.social avatar

@mcc @jlfischer Oh yeah definitely don't bother then. Unless it's no_std as in wasm.

nota,
@nota@chaos.social avatar

@mcc @jlfischer Yeah definititely just ignore ecs I'd say, you have enough problems already

Also, none of those "pay a flat fee for unlimited access to our expensive Content Library" business models work, they've never worked and it's only becoming clearer that they can never work without VC subsidies, and it's ridiculous to see all these supposed tech business gurus still launching new versions of it in 2023

I don't know how I missed this, but turns out that that TETRA, the widely used encrypted radio network, considers their encryption algorithm so secret they only put it in hardware or a secure enclave

And turns out what that was perhaps primarily hiding was the super secret key derivation function backdoor that drops the key length from 80 bits to 32 lol

I feel like at this point "If you won't tell me it's definitely blatantly backdoored" is a sufficent argument against secret algorithms, no need to explain Kerckhoffs principle

Pet youtube video editing peeve: When they insert fullscreen shots from some movie or something into the video to explain some reference or joke they just made

Either I'd gotten it already, in which case it's now obnoxious and heavy-handed instead of a subtle gag

Or I didn't get it, in which case I've now been taken out of the video for a few seconds trying to see if I should be understanding a throwaway gag that's not actually important to the video

How on earth has Vodafone not been sued or reprimanded in some way for their bullshit of going around houses with some story about just checking the cable connections to get into people's homes and deploy extremely deceptive high pressure sales tactics.

It's happened like three times over the last two years now.

on one hand I kind of wish OBS had taken more inspiration from video mixing hardware, they really had a great workflow figured out already and OBS is super janky to use in comparison

on the other hand, I wonder if not having to learn any of the pro grade conventions and jargon is part of why OBS rose so meteorically and beat out all of the professional tools? If it was made by anyone with broadcast experience it would have lost the classic foss ui jank that ultimately made it so approachable.

nota,
@nota@chaos.social avatar

Like anyone in broadcast would have absolutely scoffed at the idea that people would just edit their scenes live on the program bus, but with streamers who had to learn like 5 roles already, stopping what you're doing to resize something on screen just became a tolerated part of the medium and it didn't matter

and it's interesting how that's moved to YouTube too, with some people shooting everything in OBS and then just uploading that after at most cutting out some dead air

I wonder what it's like being that person who has to write all of those wildly obscure statistics ("this will be chance for [name] to break the record for scoring two points on a Wednesday in peru three times in a row for the first time since 2013") for sports commentators to say to when there's absolutely nothing interesting going on
