Is there any foundation created to fund and promote development of one specific foss project that isn't a shitshow

nota,
@nota@chaos.social avatar

@gsuberland Yeah, although a lot of these do seem to chose becoming a member of SFC, LF/CNCF, etc. instead these days

I had somehow missed or forgotten that Oracle was in the running for operating TikTok in the US and I completely creased over laughing. It's hard to imagine a more ridiculously mismatched company to run a social media site primarily used by teenagers.

@gsuberland they might as well just ban it right then and there

hmm. did all the wikichip maintainers quit updating the site? looks like there's nothing on there since about late 2019

nota,
@nota@chaos.social avatar

@gsuberland Yeah it's been pretty dead since, I think they shifted focus to that fuse freemium analysis newsletter. But that also hasn't seen anything in months apparently.

@nota@chaos.social avatar

@gsuberland I've found chips and cheese a pretty good replacement, it has a bunch more details based on original research using microbenchmarks. But it's also in article form which is a bit more annoying to reference.

nix users: what bothers you most about nix (ux-wise or otherwise)? what seems the most mysterious to you?

nota,
@nota@chaos.social avatar

@ktemkin I agree with most of the common things people have said, but there's two extra things that nag me that I haven't seen:

  • Inability to run multiple configurations of a service. Unless the nixpkgs author specifically intended this, you're just on your own.
  • Lack of modeling of stateful things. State is inevitable and every service grows it's own bash and runtime systemd unit state machines and ad hoc file system tests for determining the state of things that are very hard to introspect.

I don't have enough room on my hard drive to both fit this software installer and also the software it's trying to install, and it's gradually sinking in that all of my git repos containing Rust projects are likeโ€ฆ really large, like really shockingly large. Like 8 GB for small sample programs that happen to have wgpu as a dependency. 8.6GB for iced. 11.7GB for my checkout of regular wgpu.

25GB (!) for my checkout of cosmic-epoch but that's like, basically an operating system so ok.

nota,
@nota@chaos.social avatar

@mcc Is this the actual project, or just the target/ directory?
Those always seem to leak cached build artifacts endlessly especially with frequent recompiles
I had a bevy project that was like 25GB which shrank to like 500MB after a cargo clean && cargo build

nota,
@nota@chaos.social avatar

@mcc it doesn't gc I'm afraid, although you can specify what exactly to delete. But usually it's not too much of a burden to delete everything because every new rustc release requires a complete new rebuild anyway. Indeed that's part of why the target dir gets so big as I understand.

The best part of the RegioShuttle is all of these tiny places with no design budget getting to wrap their little trains in a bespoke local paint scheme. They're just so good.

incredibly minor pet peeve: People saying "ISO timestamp" when they actually mean the much more narrowly defined RFC3339 timestamps which the thing people actually use because:

  • they have a single canonical, unambiguous form you can actually parse without additional context, unlike the ISO ones
  • it's the spec you can actually afford to read

    something I had never considered before: planets with atmospheres compositionally capable of sustaining carbon-based life but with atmospheric pressures below about 0.5 bar are far more unlikely to lead to intelligent species which reach industrialisation simply because cooking and steam power don't work well at those pressures.

    nota,
    @nota@chaos.social avatar

    @gsuberland I think that's kind of a loaded assumption, whatever intelligent life out there is extremely unlikely to look or function anything like human society. It's, IMO, far more likely to be something weird like a planet sized fungal network or some sort of thing we wouldn't even recognize as a being or life form within our categories. After all there's billions of successful species on earth alone that never learned to cook.

    nota,
    @nota@chaos.social avatar

    @gsuberland There's any number of much smaller factors that lead to not having industrialization tbh, considering it's a thing that only really happened organically in a few regions on earth by happenstance in the first place. It's not like a civ tech tree
