    @GhostOnTheHalfShell I didn't realize that Vaush published this as its own segment.

    Edit: oh, wait, it's not Vaush's channel. WTF?

    Yeah, chat was being stupid. There's been this bizarre claim going around that "NJB has never provided solutions" despite me having a whole playlist of videos about Strong Towns, promoting Strong Towns for years, and mentioning solutions in multiple videos.

    @guusdk no, nobody has sent me that, but it's also paywalled and I don't have an NRC account.

    I mentioned in my latest video that the English-language version of the Wikipedia article for Berlagebrug was woefully inadequate compared to the Dutch-language version, and immediately several people rushed to update it.

    @notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

    Although I also noticed that the Wikipedia editors are being strict and avoiding direct translations from the Dutch in favour of re-recreating the English version with proper sources, which is probably the best idea for the long-term quality of the article anyway.

    Thanks to everyone who updated (and is currently still updating) the article!

    Here it is:

    @luis_in_brief yeah, I'm using that power wisely, unlike @Hbomberguy who used his power so that Mastodon would change the "Post!" button to "TOOT!"

    https://mastodon.social/@Hbomberguy/146524

    I am now going to hit the shiny new "Publish!" button ...

    @meena Dutch was a really easy language to learn. Anybody that says it's difficult (for English speakers) doesn't know what they're talking about.

    I've learned Mandarin Chinese. Now THAT is a difficult language. And Cantonese is worse.

    The only difficult part about learning Dutch is getting Dutch people to not switch to English when you're first starting out.

    Real talk time:

    "Just asking questions" is a weapon. We know full-well that some people exploit it to feign innocence when deliberately throwing noise into discussions. And it works in large part because it encourages otherwise earnest discussions which then contribute to the noise.

    So be careful.

    notjustbikes,
    @notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

    @TechConnectify there's a term in Dutch that's used to describe this: mierenneuken.

    It literally means "ant fucking" but it's basically this; focusing on little nitpicking details that derail productive conversation. I appreciate how quickly Dutch people point this out when it happens, and that usually puts a stop to it.

    We need less ant fuckery in online discussions.

    My latest video is now live on YouTube!

    Amsterdam needed to close a 90-year old historic bridge for for almost 4 months for necessary renovations.

    But they closed it to cars ... and built a whole new temporary bridge for bikes.

    @jfmezei well yeah, it's been opened to cars since November.

    Borrowed from @notjustbikes. This is the lovely work of our incompetent, deeply corrupt elected leaders that insist fighting climate change comes down to individual action.

    @arroz I had so many commenters saying, "this is misleading because we needed to rebuild highways in Eastern Europe" as if rebuilding with trains was not an option. 🙄

    This new track by ARTBAT & Armin van Buuren ("Take Off") is a banger. It's such a good mix of techno and trance.

    I would love to hear this on a good-quality system at a festival!

    Guys, I used to be a hard house and hard trance DJ in the 90s!

    @socks hah!

    My Tuque's Too Tight predates this even more and was recorded with my funk band in 1995!

    The video I made is the least-watched video on my channel. 🤣

    @cdamian yeah that tracks.

    Go to any classic EDM track on YouTube and the comments are full of, "I'm 50 now but I still love this" or "my dad plays this song" 😂

    @soviut I have some very close friends who used to spin Happy Hardcore, and I used to go to a lot of hardcore parties, but I have to admit that I was never really into Gabber.

    I used to call it "people screaming in Dutch", which was an accurate description.

    But when the Gabber would come on I'd go to the 2nd room that was usually playing trance.

    @moritz @socks lol that's so true. I maxed out those CD-Rs!

    The mixes themselves were recorded to minidisc. No computers involved.

    One of the most annoying things about being an English-language content creator are the Americans who insist that everything must be about them.

    I can make a video that never mentions the US once, and I will get hundreds of responses about the US.

    I will get people claiming that I'm wrong because of some issue unique to the US.

    I will get Americans telling me that I have a moral responsibility to help them fix their cities, despite the fact that I'm not American and I don't live there.

    @Tijn @alda wow, that is exactly what I had in mind. 😂

    Our eldest son can do this accent PERFECTLY and it's hilarious when he does it. I wish I could pull that off.

    @xyhhx omfg I had never heard the term "Seppo" before, but a quick search of seppo and sepposplaining lead to some quality Aussie content. Thanks for that.

    I love that it's short for "Septic Tank Yank". I'm dying! 🤣

    @n0toose @martin_ueding there's also the opposite effect where everybody outside of it will irrationally hate their country's most populous province and/or city

    notjustbikes,
    @notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com avatar

    @n0toose @martin_ueding I think it's just that the most populous areas are talked about the most, and have the most political influence, simply because they have the most people there.

    So people outside of those areas feel like they're being ignored, but it's just because they are in the minority.

    Some of it is somewhat related to why we're dunking on Americans in this thread though: that the people in those areas talk about their own issues, often to the exclusion of other people's issues.
