This Vienna street isn’t “closed” because cars have been removed. It has successfully been “opened” to everything else, to a diverse and invigorated civic life, because cars have been replaced by a multitude of wonderful things.

Language matters.

@notjustbikes in my city in Spain (Oviedo), after years of doing the bare minimum, the city council is finally doing some more serious bike and pedestrian infrastructure. This one should connect some of the farthest neighbourhoods with the city center in what's essentially a straight line. Quite excited about this.

Oviedo's new bike infraestructure

@eonity@mastodon.social avatar

@gyozaPower @notjustbikes Pretty similar situation here in Singapore as well. After years of putting in pretty bad and half-hearted cycling infrastructure, our country is now finally starting to put in serious cycling infrastructure. For example, in the suburban new town of Ang Mo Kio, they are constructing a new separated cycling road together with expansions works to an existing metro station (which will be a stop on a new metro line).

As I told Canada's CBC News:

"'We are so used to subsidizing cars, treating streets as car parking, we don't even recognize what we've lost in doing so.' [Zipper] suggested using spaces once occupied by cars for bike lanes, gardens or cafés."

Every debate about reducing the use of polluting modes of transport (driving, flying, etc.) goes like this:

  • Driving is harmful to the environment, let's reduce it.
  • But what about this POOR RURAL PERSON who needs to drive all the time?
  • Well, we're not banning it, just making it more expensive.
  • Isn't it unfair that the rich can buy their way out of being green?
  • We'll improve transport alternatives with the tax money.
  • But what about this poor person living in a REALLY remote area?

NEW EPISODE!

"When Driving is Not an Option with Anna Zivarts."

One-third of people in the US can’t drive. Those tens of millions of people are often invisible to planners and elected officials, and that’s why Anna Letitia Zivarts, a low-vision nondriver and activist has written a new book, "When Driving Is Not an Option: Steering Away from Car Dependency." We talked with Anna about building a system that works for everyone.

My latest video about speed limits and Amsterdam's new 30 km/h streets is now available to Nebula and Patreon subscribers.

As usual, the YouTube release will be on Sunday.

The snark is turned up to 11 on this one, so I'm expecting a visit from the Tone Police in the comments. 😂

@MrLee @Aurimas @nerd4cities yes, exactly.

Advocacy is local, which is why I get so annoyed when people demand that I make "step by step videos" telling them how to fix their city (and get mad when I don't).

That's why I refer people to Strong Towns. They're a great first step to figure out what you need to do in your neighbourhood.

Otherwise, join your local safe streets or cycling advocacy group.

But either way, stop asking YouTubers and start talking to people locally.

Many many valid points.
Is there any other way we could save lives, help the environment, reduce injuries, improve mental health, reduce pollution, make transport cheaper, and more, for such a small amount of money and effort?
