Tom Nook is a tanuki, not a raccoon. Tanuki aren’t raccoons they just look like them kinda. Tanuki are canines, whereas Raccoons are in the family Procyonidae. Raccoons’ front paws are hand-like, whereas Tanukis’ front paws are like a dog. Raccoons are native to North America, while Tanuki are only native to Japan. Assuming this is real, this is probably some shit he used to do when he was a kid, maybe with his parents or older sibling or something, and he still occasionally does it because of nostalgia or habit.
