I must have weird taste in scifi movies.
I just watched Atlas and thought it was pretty good.

But I thought Rebel Moon stank on ice.

Go figure.

SD cards are the literal worst.

they've expanded to be the size of small hard drives, and devices like the rpi keep using them as boot media, but they:

  • use garbage tier low endurance flash cells internally
  • have little to no overprovisioning for wear
  • perform only the most basic wear levelling
  • have no protocol level integrity checking
  • have few internal error correction features, if any
  • decay comparatively quickly without patrol scrubs
  • do not perform patrol scrubs
  • cannot do PLP

So you are telling me I have set myself up to fail by sticking a one terabytes SD card into my tablet?

I guess I'll have to teach myself how to set up an NAS or something.

I've seen the bug-eye design used in the "Dan Dare - pilot of the future" comic books

I'll try to transcribe it for you when I can get to my desktop with a real keyboard. There is no way I can type all that with a tablet's glass keyboard.

So this happened. Given the colour and the fact they were working with nitric acid, I'm feeling somewhat doubtful this was (relatively benign) nitrous oxide.

I assume any chemical compound that makes an orange cloud is bad news for a human being to come in contact with? Even if it isn't actually on Derek Lowe's list?

Yeah, but it has serious drawbacks. For starters, it looks like the rocket exhaust could vaporize Rhode Island.

Yeah, but any nation who tried to build one of those monsters would suddenly find hostile nations going to DEFCON 2.

The person on the other end of the red telephone would say "We know a weapon of mass destruction when we see it, buddy-boy..."

There was a study done in 1968.

Nowadays? Not a chance.

It is all fun and games, until the quartz chamber cracks at ten kilometers altitude.

Then you have a fissioning reactor that is already vaporized, spreading to the four winds over the entire damn planet.

Might be making a rod for my own back here, but I think the next thing I try to build in Blender, might be a Star Wars spaceship dock - like Docking Bay 94 from ANH. Or Peli Motto's Hangar 3-5 from The Mandalorian.

I will, of course, have to design a SW ship to go in it.

The man is in the flow! That wasn't much time at all, sketch to 3d mock-up. Nice clay render, with great lighting.

Art question:

Some projects in the colored pencil book I'm working through ask for various shades of gray. My 36-color Prismacolor set doesn't have any grays, just black and white. What should I do? Fake it by varying pressure with the black colored pencil or graphite?

nyrath,

@peterdrake

Is the book a set of projects, or is it a set of tutorials.

If tutorials, probably best to find some various shades of grey pencils.

If projects, just use varying pressure, maybe experimenting with varying pressures of black on top of varying pressures of white.

nyrath,
@nyrath@spacey.space avatar

@peterdrake

Tutorials probably are teaching you things like "in this area you should have 75% black and 25% white".

So I'd look for some gradated grey colored pencils
