Might be making a rod for my own back here, but I think the next thing I try to build in Blender, might be a Star Wars spaceship dock - like Docking Bay 94 from ANH. Or Peli Motto's Hangar 3-5 from The Mandalorian.

I will, of course, have to design a SW ship to go in it.

nyrath,

@thisnorthernboy

Of course you will be obligated to design a Star Wars spaceship for the doc.

Them's the rules...

Art question:

Some projects in the colored pencil book I'm working through ask for various shades of gray. My 36-color Prismacolor set doesn't have any grays, just black and white. What should I do? Fake it by varying pressure with the black colored pencil or graphite?

nyrath,
@nyrath@spacey.space avatar

@peterdrake

Is the book a set of projects, or is it a set of tutorials.

If tutorials, probably best to find some various shades of grey pencils.

If projects, just use varying pressure, maybe experimenting with varying pressures of black on top of varying pressures of white.

nyrath,
@nyrath@spacey.space avatar

@peterdrake

Tutorials probably are teaching you things like "in this area you should have 75% black and 25% white".

So I'd look for some gradated grey colored pencils

I think one of the creative blocks that I face daily (my entire life) is that I THINK TO MUCH.

Not "I think well" too much. I just think too much. I imagine the thing I want to create, and that imagining leads me down multiple potential paths, which gets me into analysis paralysis and I can't decide which way to go. So that leads me into a spiral of self-doubt, which leads me to self-loathing, which leads me to "eh, what's the point?" and I don't do anything.

Good morning!

Reminds me of the old joke: "In every project there comes a time to shoot the engineers and start production".

An ensemble cast is so darn useful for a creator! It lends itself to the "war movie bomber crew" model, also known as "Ragtag Bunch of Misfits" or "The Guns of Navarone".

Not to mention the "found family" model.

This is an independent DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and attempts to show you sites you perhaps weren't aware of.

This search engine isn't particularly well equipped to answering queries posed like questions, instead try to imagine some text that might appear in the website you are looking for, and search for that.

Where this search engine really shines is finding small, old and obscure websites about some given topic

Dang, that's sweet!

And you are not just getting more skilled with Blender 3d.
The rate that you are learning new Bender skills is accelerating

nyrath,
@nyrath@spacey.space avatar

@thisnorthernboy

I tried making basic mockups in Blender 3d, then printing out on paper just the shading. Then I drew on the paper with a rapidograph. The technique shows promise but I need a lot of practice to make it work.

nyrath, (edited )
@nyrath@spacey.space avatar

@thisnorthernboy

They were a little stiff compared to the looseness of a totally free hand drawing. Perhaps warping the model a bit.

Or not trying to trace the rendered image (i.e., print out the image, prop it up as an artist's model, then manually draw on a blank piece of paper while glancing at the model).

nyrath,
@nyrath@spacey.space avatar

@thisnorthernboy

That's OK, Blender has tons of goodies to learn. Addicted to modeling, maybe, but it is time well spent. And the results are impressive.

Everyone wants to remake the good stuff... what about remakes of the truly awful shows with fantastic potential in their ideas?

My suggestion: a modern version of Ark II (1976) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0127989/?ref_=ls_t_19

"Three young scientists travel around the country in the 25th century after the world has been ravaged by pollution. In their hi-tech RV (called Ark II), they study the land and help out those in need."

Is that not a fantastic premise?

I remember the episode with the village suffering a failing harvest, and the evil corporate CEO fresh out of suspended animation with his company's super duper fertilizer (toxic side effects at no extra charge).

We've all heard "My Dad had one of those" about cars.

I want to know what your Mum had as her car to get about. Wherever you are in the world, whatever time period. What vehicle did your Mum (or other maternal guardian) cherish and use and wax lyrical about?

I might be planning a little project...

My Mum had a moped, a Honda Cub I think (I'll have to dig out a photo), that was her freedom in the 70s.

A 1964 Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser.
With the window in the roof to keep me and my siblings entertained.

IIRC when we got our Vista Cruiser, it had no seat belts.

Since my father was in the USAF, he knew that seat belts saved lives, since all military aircraft has them. So he had a local garage install them.

New starship work in progress.

For a long time I have been a fan of the Corvette design from the game Independence War (I-War) box art. I finally decided to do a ship inspired by that design.

Enjoy.

nyrath,

@RJB_Mallacore

Great starship!

As a matter of historical interest (which has zero bearing on your design) the I-War ship has a circular profile because the outer edge is a circular particle accelerator feeding the particle beam weapon.

Feel free to totally ignore my compulsive pedantry

nyrath,
@nyrath@spacey.space avatar

@Steveg58 @RJB_Mallacore

You mean like a tunable free-electron laser?
That would be cool, but in the game it was just a boring particle beam weapon.
