"Don’t vote for Biden, not good enough"
"Don’t use electric cars, not good enough"
"Don’t donate to Wikipedia, they don’t need the money"
"Don’t donate your change at the store, they’re ripping you off"
"Don’t use Mastodon, use this fork instead"

I suspect these are a lot of the same people.

@billyjoebowers time to share my MOST HATED one of these: don't use reusable grocery bags, they take more resources to make than plastic ones

@billyjoebowers this helicopter out of hell is too problematic for me, first: American Industrial Complex! Second: NO ORGANIC OPTION FOR RATIONS! Third: the guy that sent it did some bad stuff! Send it back!

Is there a sector of Mastodon? I want to repair the top flap of a leather bag that's basically two pieces of leather back to back that have come apart at the side seam. I'm pretty sure I just need to trim loose threads, apply a glue and clamp it, but what glue is right for the job? I have Gorilla fabric glue and Shoe Gloo available right now, but would using either of those be a mistake? Any help is gratefully received!

Went thrifting again, still obsessed with finding leather bags. Today's bag haul: one purple Fossil bag with a damaged front flap for $7 (I am pretty sure I can repair this) and two She + Lo crossover bags for $13 and $6 respectively. That grey one is a weird little guy, the studs are flat like Lego studs.

paparatti,
@paparatti@phire.place avatar

A thing I know about my obsessions is that as long as I'm on budget, it's better to just follow them where they take me. Life is too short to feel bad about what you're interested in.

Oh no, Alice Munro has died, how sad. Make no mistake: she was one of the absolute best out there, just so clear and clean and PRECISE in writing about the flow of life. She basically redefined the whole short story/novella genre. Just shook it out and said nah, you don't need all that padding to tell a story, just don't forget what makes a character and their life real.

But for all the sadness: 92 years is a good run, and I'm so glad we had her. May she rest in peace.

@billyjoebowers my review of him is this: it's much easier if you don't know anything about him because then it reads as a pastiche of popculture and modern trends. Unfortunately, he joined social media and promptly showed his ass AND his empty skull, so I haven't read any of his books since. He's a good writer (the airplane crash in Glamorama will haunt me forever) but uh... I have better things to do. Better books to read, thoughts to think etc.

paparatti,
@paparatti@phire.place avatar

@billyjoebowers I bet you'll like this though: Andrea Long Chu's review of the shitty book he wrote during his time attention whoring it up on Twitter. It is wonderful/brutal. https://www.bookforum.com/print/2601/bret-easton-ellis-rages-against-the-decline-of-american-culture-20825

Looking for some new neck gaiters. I do not understand why these cost $30-40 or more for name brands.

paparatti,
@paparatti@phire.place avatar

@billyjoebowers I got curious so I started looking these up - Patagonia's costing $35 makes sense. They're made in a fair trade factory, with certified sustainable material. But North Face doesn't provide the same certifications/labor guarantees, and sell them for $25? And all the options on Dicks Sporting Goods are basically the same price bracket? Fuck that. That's a scam.

After all the shit we've seen the last few years I cannot believe that the Israeli genocide is an isolated event that just happens to be stoking antisemitism and causing unrest and confusion leading up to the election.

@billyjoebowers I swear to god: all the disinformation experts/political scientists were warning of this last year. Be prepared for bullshit during the run up to the US election! they said. Take it seriously! And everyone thinks they're too smart to be manipulated, so no one took it seriously.

The Japan Times: Over 40% of Japan's municipalities at risk of vanishing, study finds... More than 40% of Japan’s municipalities might eventually vanish due to a sharp population decline brought on by a chronically low birthrate, according to a study by a private group of experts. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/04/24/japan/society/depopulation-municipalities-vanish/

@ai6yr I always think of British culture as particularly stubborn and self-destructive, but yeah, we have nothing on the Japanese. The good news is that when they finally hit their lowest point and someone (an entire generation?) takes on the duty of restoration, their international reputation is still pretty solid, so they should find few physical issues rebuilding sustainably. The only real obstacle is their national mindset. Imperialism is one hell of a drug. Takes a while to rehab from it.

Saw a take on Bluesky that was pissing on Doctorow for his coining of "enshittification", but let's be real: most people aren't terminally online, most people don't read leftist political theory, most people don't listen to radical podcasts or talk about "praxis".

@juliancday when I think about how most people online now arrived online after Twitter/Youtube launched, and have no idea what the old internet used to look like, it's both mindblowing and incredibly sad. And it explains so much. They have no idea!

Found the right dresser! She's an old lady from Montana, so I need to go over parts with wood glue and... epoxy? Filler? And then some wax or polish. And reline the drawers. But it's the right size, the right price, not too heavy, not too ugly, and the drawers don't completely suck.
