look, there’s a lot going on here, but my impression is that there’s a “cities are fine, actually” orthodoxy amongst the urbanist folks that’s not 100% correct. something is going wrong. https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2023/05/02/nordstorm-closing-san-francisco/

@IMGoph sure, that’s the big picture, but the little picture is that there can definitely be periods of several decades during transitions when cities are not fine (like, living in American cities in 70s-90s was not great) and I think it’s important to try to avoid that.

@IMGoph yeah I guess we’ll see! I think another lesson one could probably draw from this whole thing is handing over retail space to a handful of big box stores is probably not a very resilient approach to urban commerce.
