There's a petition aimed at the EBU for jury votes to be removed from Eurovision in light of the controversy over their skewed voting in Eurovision 2023.
A massive thank you to to every server admin on the #Fediverse who tried to keep their server going under the tsunami wave of posts about Eurovision - whether your server was #Mastodon, #Calckey, #Pixelfed, #Friendica, etc. You all did a fantastic job on the night, no matter the result. I would like to think everyone cannot thank you enough.
Seeing everyone participate in Eurovision on the Fediverse was spectacular. I've never seen so much excitement and chatter before. I felt like I was part of a wholesome community - something I've longed for in other social media platforms, but never truly got with all the anger, aggression, and trolling. None of that was here, and it made the Fediverse absolutely beautiful! ❤️
When I find some time this week I'll post a run-down on my website on how each of the 37 participating countries went and where to from here.
In the meantime, can I issue a plea to take a deep breath and employ some nuance when discussing the result. One of the reasons I joined Mastodon was because I was sick of the toxicity on Twitter and other social media sites, and I'm disappointed to see echoes of it here. Take it elsewhere, please.
I had a lot of people engaging about #Eurovision last night, and for those of you that follow me for security and tech wondering if my account had been hijacked. It hadn’t, and this will probably be my last post about Eurovision Song Contest this year.
But I’d like to go into some of the minutiae and nuance of the contest, and explain why not everything is as it seems from the outside.
@SecurityWriter Great explanatory thread about #Eurovision2023. I don’t have a TV and haven’t watched it since childhood, so hadn’t understood some of the nuances.
Oh for a Europe of glitter, camp, joy, peace, solidarity, affirmation, and sparkles every day! ⭐️⭐️ 🪩✨✨
🇪🇺🇺🇦 🏳️🌈 Loved this mad event since watching it religiously as a child, even attending the dress-rehearsal in Lausanne in 1989.
Listening to #Eurovision on BBC radio, as no TV where I am now. I inexcusably fell asleep mid-way last night… Also nice, for once, to have the UK back in the middle of it, an integral part of the 🇪🇺 party, not awkwardly on the side. #BrexitHasFailed#brexit#Eurovision2023
I'm often disappointed at how skewed the public's vote is. Say what you like about juries, but they usually spread the votes more evenly. There were some countries that really didn't deserve the very low televote they received.
@jonty The Chalamet cheekbones Dune sci-fi whispering cosplay?
Come on, nothing doing on there. Could have left them in the semis and put Ireland through, that would have been more fun #eurovision#eurovision2023
Even though I miss the annual party my ex & I used to throw, I really enjoyed #Eurovision2023 - the BBC and Liverpool and all the hosts did a grand job, and I love that everyone loves Hannah Waddingham now. Finland woz robbed though.
Once again Eurovision proved to be the best 4 hours of television and social media of the year and my first without Twitter for a very long time. Thank you my federated friends for providing chat, banter, and fun without the unpleasantness of the other place.
Also massive congratulations to Liverpool for hosting and showing the world that the UK can be inclusive, welcoming, and loving despite everything about this rancid government and our foul media.
OC Regarding those two toppin' songs at Eurovision 2023... (also an indirect Omori crossover meme)
