@gorplop @RueNahcMohr That is NEAT. Now you've got me wondering where the cover of Robbie Williams' "Supreme" came from.

philpem,
@philpem@digipres.club avatar

@gorplop @RueNahcMohr Also, is it wrong I recognised the Motorola GM300 front panel you used as a speaker? Complete with "Taxi Driver spec" tobacco-yellow buttons...

philpem,
@philpem@digipres.club avatar

@gorplop that sounds like a line driver issue if the chip is running OK. also they're old-guard mot so they need a real (differential) RIB.

The joys of CrossCountry rail: I've spent my whole lunch break staring at XC seating plans, RealTimeTrains data, and Trainsplit's seat booking... and I still have no idea whether I'm going to have a table seat or power socket for the trip to EMFcamp later this month.

Somehow Arriva manage to run the best buses around here, and the worst trains.

Sounds like packing the Charles Stross novel @orman surprised me with might not be such a bad idea, if there's a chance of a Ryanair-class trip

philpem,
@philpem@digipres.club avatar

During this whole debacle I also decided to try and book the tickets on XC's website just to try and get a reasonable seating plan... but they've removed the seat picker from their website. Everyone into Coach C!... yes, especially when the coach is full!

Oh for some competition from another TOC on the Leeds to Birmingham route, or for Arriva to be stripped of their franchise - along with Avanti... which is the most ironic name for a TOC with so many cancellations. (it's Italian for "forward")

philpem,
@philpem@digipres.club avatar

There is a reason I travel mostly with LNER... and mostly it's that knowing I can pull out the laptop and tune out the rest of the world while I'm stuck in a metal tube hurtling down the rails makes me feel better. If I ask for "that seat, there, with the table", that's what I get... also means I can try and get a through reservation on split tickets, which saves playing Musical Chairs just when I've got comfy!

Did proper work yest, I know, right!

Old Group C/D Aerial, so close to Midhurst it still worked
Water logged coax which killed Mast Head Amp. Amp that was unnecessary from the start - but that old scam of fitting it, then an attenuator. Grrrrr

My best side too, honest, it is

philpem,

@avavsystems Looks like a decent little FM/DAB dipole there too, albeit a little mossy. I've a similar one on the roof, chained to a diplexer. Masthead amp chased by an attenuator is such a pointless endeavour! Even if it's to make room for possible expansion with a splitter - in that case a variable-gain amplified splitter in the loft is much more convenient!

@halfy hah, snap! they're good huh? Tasmota+mqtt rocks. I love the little DIY rust daemon.
also: you're making me want to set up Grafana (if I can find a way to piggyback it off the Homeassistant history data). Seems like it does a better job of time-series data than Hass.

Early this morning COX Internet went out again for over an hour according to logs. This morning it was out again for an hour.

I called into COX to find out why we've been experiencing so many frequent outages. The CSR comes on the line and tells me there are crews working in the area performing upgrades to enhance service.

Me: What are these upgrades for?

CSR: Upgrades to improve service.

Me: What does that mean for me, what kind of benefits will I see?

CSR: Faster speed

Me: Why wasn't I notified about these upgrades and planned outages so I can plan accordingly?

CSR: This is an outage and it wasn't planned.

Me: But you said this was an upgrade. Shouldn't it have been planned and scheduled?

CSR: I don't have that information.

Me: Can I be credited for the outages.

CSR: Not while there are still planned outages. But once they are completed you can call back and request a credit.

🤔

Sometimes it's hard to figure out why a server is moving like hot wax down a cold lead pipe. Other times you run GoAccess against the logs and it becomes very, very clear.
Fail2ban configured, StopForumSpam blocklist imported, and now that problem is solved.

Leftovers from last night's burglar alarm repairs. I never expected to see the BTC logo (yes, the keyboard maker) on a passive IR pyroelectric sensor. The sensor element is from Hiemann in Wiesbaden, near Frankfurt. This thing must have been fairly expensive in its time (1991-1992).
