Young people are waking up every day to media about war, genocides, dead children. They are unsure of being able to make a living, scared by debt, violence, addiction, homelessness. They are unsure if the burning planet will even support their lives. They are struggling for secure basic housing after having their lives upended by a pandemic...

gasp

when @radiofreelunch extremely generously offered to send me a "couple" old Newtons, i balked. i had an old MP2100 years ago, and it was tough to get software loaded on them, even with all the correct hardware

driving home an hour later, i thought: what the hell is wrong with me, i'm turning down a free newton?! 😅

a week later, this amazingly heavy bundle of Newtons and Newton peripherals arrived. thank you good sir :D

Pictured:

Newton Fax Modem (battery-powered!)

there is extensive battery leak/corrosion from the AA batteries on each of them, so they'll spend the next few months getting some TLC. hopefully most survive!

Good combo of repair items at Repair Cafe yesterday: I had a shiny recent model Samsung microwave (transformer cactus, owner is going to order the replacement and bring it back).

Across from me, a hand cranked Singer sewing machine bought in Sri Lanka in 1953. It was brought to the cafe by the first owner's son, she'd left meticulous documentation with it including the original warranty and a local repair docket from 1988!

(The sewing machine left in good working order!)

Dishonourable mention to this Hyundai branded portable camping power bank (battery powered alternative to a generator.)

Less than four years old, the LiFePO4 batteries had leaked inside the casing and made a total mess.

Even worse, the internal frame was designed such that it was impossible to securely re-install the back cover after unscrewing it, without dismantling the rest of the power bank and rebuilding it. Two cents worth of plastic spacers would have avoided that.

Out of warranty, but I encouraged the owners to call up and quote the Australian Consumer Law to the seller to try and get it repaired. I don't see any way this isn't a cell manufacturing defect, failing like this after such a short time.

Close up of the battery part from the first photo, showing the mess it's made in more detail.

So, you heard the good word that masks work? Are you looking to use that report to get back into masking regularly—because getting sick all the time is the pits—but there’s way more variety than way back in 2020 and you’re overwhelmed for choice? Have I got a shopping guide for you! With bonus infographics!

Here’s my little crash course in what to look for and how to determine the best fit for your face. It’s as easy as shopping for a new pair of jeans!

You write safe Rust.

I disabled SIGSEGV in my C++.

We are not the same.

In all seriousness, I'd love if anyone had a better solution to this problem. But there doesn't seem to be any SFR bit I can set to make the STM32H7 flash IP not throw a bus fault on an ECC failure.

So if you ever have a bug in your firmware that writes to the same flash ECC block twice without erasing it, that flash block will become toxic and any future attempt to deref any address within it will segfault. Not good if you're trying to make a robust, log-structured data store (in which any bug or unexpected power cycle poisons the entire key-value store, segfaulting future reads).

Turning off faults when writing, or when doing CRC checks on read data, allows graceful degradation when things go wrong.

Still trying to figure out why the bootloader seems to be stepping on non-blank flash cells (it should be appending at the end), but at least it's not soft-bricking the board by throwing the bootloader into a fault handler before it reaches the DFU flow.

Let's talk about smoking.

It's one of the worst things I ever did when I was a teenager. I'm addicted to nicotine now. I smell like a binfire and I will find every excuse I can to fuck off for a fag.

I'm now 44. If I don't stop smoking it will probably kill me.

It's fucking disgusting but I'm addicted.

I have lately found ways of cutting down, mainly those nice pouches you stick in your lip. Vapes, patches or anything else have never worked for me at all

Don't be me. Don't smoke.

Well, sadly, is shutting down.

So, lil tooters, what is the best alternative to Songwhip? I've just gone through a couple of 'BEST ALTERNATIVE' lists and they were obviously generated by drunk AIs. In a coal scuttle. With low batteries. Just awful.

I'm hoping you ugly bags of mostly water can do better?
