LEFT: Stephen Gillers insisting Sam Alito cannot possibly have known that the flag flying outside his home was upside down, and anyone who says otherwise lacks objectivity.

RIGHT: Sam Alito's workplace, with flags in every direction.

Pretty sure Alito knows what the damn flag looks like.

A photo of the interior of the Supreme Court, with real big flags on each side of the bench upon which Sam Alito sits during oral arguments.

Thanks to @saghul for the perfect illustration of the problems with chatGPT:

@steely_glint @saghul MetaAI answer:

2kg of feathers is heavier than 1kg of lead. Even though the feathers take up more space, their total mass is greater than the lead's.

To clarify, the term "heavy" can refer to either an object's mass (the amount of matter it contains) or its density (the amount of mass per unit volume). In this case, the 2kg of feathers has a greater mass, but the 1kg of lead is denser. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Ok, I'm not understanding why people want to delete or change their StackOverflow answers so that they contain errors to throw off the LLMs. StackOverflow is a valuable resource for human coders and it's not like we thought we were going to make any money by posting those answers - that was never the point. If LLMs are going to be trained on those answers then I want them to be accurate because it's kind of inevitable at this point.

philtor,
@philtor@fosstodon.org avatar

@jamesbritt I've got plenty of answers on SO. Some have garnered a good amount of points. I don't feel used. I don't have a problem with them being used to train LLMs.

philtor,
@philtor@fosstodon.org avatar

@jamesbritt Was I being used before if someone used one of my answers to make a lot of money for a corporation?

I would like to remind the world that you actually don't have to get into bed with OpenAI. StackOverflow was a beacon of resistance, but I guess their principles were for sale after all.

https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/stack-overflow-bans-users-en-masse-for-rebelling-against-openai-partnership-users-banned-for-deleting-answers-to-prevent-them-being-used-to-train-chatgpt

philtor,
@philtor@fosstodon.org avatar

@emilymbender I just don't get poisoning the well, though? SO is often an invaluable source of information. Why scuttle answers there which are still useful for human coders so as to mess it up for LLMs? And why try to actively mistrain LLMs by posting wrong answers? It's not like the people posting answers there have been making money on those answers (I certainly haven't) so it doesn't seem like artists getting their work ripped off.

philtor,
@philtor@fosstodon.org avatar

@bgardner @emilymbender I guess I never had any expectation of compensation. They were already making money on advertising

anybody in the FPGA fediverse have any experience with the CologneChip GateMate dev board? Being able to configure logic blocks as 8-bit LUTs, 2-bit full-adder or 2x2-bit multiplier seems advantageous for my application.

Rs want to hold up the rebuilding of the Key bridge until Biden agrees to LNG exports (among other demands). The Ds just need to reframe LNG exports as exporting our American natural gas resource which raises the price of natural gas for Americans - ie reframe it to appeal to the MAGAs so as to undercut the House fReEDoM caucus.

The xz backdoor situation is ominous. Lots of implications. Kind of feels like an inflection point where open source is losing it's innocence.

As the xz thinkpieces start showing up about What Should Be Done, a couple of questions I'd encourage you to keep in mind while reading them:

  • Is this advocating security nihilism and giving up because stopping 100% of badness is impossible?
  • Is this pushing a random hobby horse like "sign your commits" that wouldn't have helped this incident in any way?
  • Is this equating employment/nationality/notoriety with trustworthiness?
  • Is this pushing a technical solution to a social problem?
philtor,
@philtor@fosstodon.org avatar

@piecritic @danderson the problem is that we don't know about other cases where we haven't gotten lucky.

The abusive behavior that was being used to manipulate Lasse Collin into bringing on more maintainers for went unnoticed because abusive behavior in Open Source communities is so pervasive. In context, we can clearly see it was part of an orchestrated operation. Out of context, it looks like just another asshole complaining about stuff they have no right to complain about. https://robmensching.com/blog/posts/2024/03/30/a-microcosm-of-the-interactions-in-open-source-projects/

@swelljoe This feels like the inflection point where open source has lost its innocence.

philtor,
@philtor@fosstodon.org avatar

@swelljoe yeah, I guess what I mean by 'innocence' here is that there's a level of trust we tended to have in a lot of OSS communities that we can't have anymore. We have to be much more guarded now in the wake of this event. We might even need things like background checks before people can contribute to certain projects
