This paper and its predecessor that Chirag Shah and I wrote started off as a reaction to Google's plans to shove "GenAI" into search. It was clear that that was a bad idea as early as 2021 (when we started writing the first paper) and it's even clearer now.

The folks at FTC Office of Technology are doing excellent work taking in research and using it to make a practical difference. See link for a range of topics they are interested in -- for anyone working in these areas, this is a great way to have impact!

As folks discuss the plundering of the open internet/sharing economy by the data-hungry LLM trainers, it seems like a good time to remind ourselves to find something other than "the tragedy of the commons" as a metaphor. On the racist, terrible origins of that phrase:

So depressed by AI Hype...hey, here's a promising story in Nature about scientists being encouraged to report negative results...I'll read that to cheer me up!

I would like to remind the world that you actually don't have to get into bed with OpenAI. StackOverflow was a beacon of resistance, but I guess their principles were for sale after all.

Wouldn't it be great if the FDA were as on top of the impacts of AI hype as the FTC?

@zenkat Yes -- as I understand it, AlphaFold is supervised machine learning over a very carefully curated dataset. Nothing out of OpenAI suggests "carefully curated dataset" is anywhere in their methodology.

@zenkat And thanks for that link! A good article indeed.

@zenkat In that case, calling this a "tailored version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT" would be outright lying.

Envisioning Information Access Systems: What Makes for Good Tools and a Healthy Web?

Must read article in ACM Transactions on the Web on challenges in information access and whether LLM might play a role (or not!), by Chirag Shah and @emilymbender

"Information access is not merely an application to be solved by the so-called ‘AI’ techniques du jour. Rather, it is a key human activity, with impacts on both individuals and society."

Better design that right!!

Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000, episode 30! @alex and guest host @timnitGebru read the Techno-Optimism Manifesto so you don't have to.

Audiogram with MAIHT3k logo, title "Episode 30: Marc's Miserable Manifesto", subtitle "How a Silicon Valley billionaire's so-called 'techno-optimist' vision has eugencist roots" Timnit Gebru: Yeah, "There are only three sources of growth. Population growth, natural resource utilization, and technology. Developed societies are depopulating all over the world, across cultures. The total human population may already be shrinking." This, uh, this reminds me of the pronatalists. I mean, he probably is one, you know, they're also in the TESCREAL bundle, right? They're like funding all of these, um, ways to, for of course, you know, white people to have kids. And it's not, it's not us that are depopulating. Right, we're overpopulating, is probably how he's feeling about it. Alex Hanna: Well, that's what, that's what, that's what “developed societies is,” you know, that's a, that's effectively a watch word for, you know, he's being like Black and Brown people. Their populations are growing. The, the barbarians are growing, but the white, the white people are shrinking, right? I mean, that's effectively, uh-- Timnit Gebru: The great replacement theory. Alex Hanna: Yeah. I mean, that's effectively saying, so it does have this kind of convergence with the pronatalists effectively, we need to promote good good eugenics, good racial hygiene. I mean, it's very much in that vein. Timnit Gebru: He's not being subtle about it at all. He writes that all over the piece.

The absolute obliviousness of Meta (the company)'s response in this article is astounding: "this is new technology and it may not always return the response we intend". The desired output here is actually easy to achieve: don't.

So much of the sales around "generative AI" are about reducing friction -- making it so anyone can "produce art" or "write novels" etc etc. So it's particularly telling to see Logitech doubling down on making it even easier. People aren't dispensing enough of the synthetic info? Maybe the problem isn't that it takes too many clicks. Maybe people are realizing that synthetic content isn't worth it.
