Someone designed an IRC client that runs from UEFI. I don’t know yet if I’m amazed or terrified.
But it could definitely be handy if you can’t boot your computer OS.

@alarig irc is so dog-simple that after reading about it for a few minutes you can probably open a telnet or netcat session to an ircd and send/receive queries and join channels. so it's not impressive on that part, but a cohesive client in UEFI i guess is impressive. I guess if you have an old PC laying around you could make a "thin" "client" that just "booted" into IRC?

@dnc so far i've planted 9 varieties, 8 from one company i've never used before and 1 set from burpee. I also have seeds from cayenne and jalapeno i grew here a few years ago, as well as some bespoke seeds sent to me by a friend in california that i still have to sprout and plant.

Here's to hoping it's a good pepper growing season!

That whole "explain it as if to your mother", or "to a housewife" bit?

It's never been acceptable.

Brilliant women who have done brilliant work have been forced into "housewife" roles for ages.

Julia Child was just one of the most famous ones, in recent history.

Thankfully, for all of us, she found a path that society accepted and embraced.

@kristinHenry i have never heard this phrase. it's nearly universally "explain it so a child can understand it". I'm sure there are others, and some people might use the housewife as a derogatory (like, the government, the medical establishment, and so on.)

@Vo state police can make more than that in the US. Nurses were around there during the pandemic.

That being said, giving it a few moments thought, 144k seems low. Like corrupt-ish low.

    @dave I don't even let my kid(s) visit grandparents if i'm ill, just to avoid the chance that they carry it over there.

    I go out in public as little as possible, but when i do there's always people hacking and sneezing and generally sounding unwell.

    Yes, people are selfish. Capitalism forces people to work when ill, as well.
