oh damn, relays really are that busy holy crap that's a lot of statuses

picofarad,
@picofarad@noauthority.social avatar

@r000t like a mastodon relay or nostr?

or, and i hesitate to ask, an x.25 packet relay, or APRS...

r000t,
@r000t@ligma.pro avatar

@picofarad
I've joined a throwaway domain to a few popular activitypub relays, for as:Public indexing. They are... Busy.

graf,
@graf@poa.st avatar

@r000t @picofarad oh ive got all kinds of those if you need some

r000t,
@r000t@ligma.pro avatar

@graf
Relays or throwaway domains?
@picofarad

r000t,
@r000t@ligma.pro avatar

@graf
Also what would you recommend for an NVMe dedicated server not in the EU that won't cave to Karens?
@picofarad

graf,
@graf@poa.st avatar

@r000t @picofarad whats your budget

r000t,
@r000t@ligma.pro avatar

@graf
Low to mid double digits, you know these losers are gonna try hitting up my clients next, so I gotta budget.

@picofarad

graf,
@graf@poa.st avatar

@r000t @picofarad well i can get you something in our datacenter. the owner ignores anything from europe and any time he gets a complaint about us he prints it out and puts it on the office wall. what kind of NVMe space are you talking about? consumer grade intel, ryzen/epyc what you need

r000t,
@r000t@ligma.pro avatar

@graf
Any processor should be fine, I'd probably be looking at 2x1TB or better for the storage, at least 16GB of memory.

What I really need to do is sit down and actually optimize postgres so I can raise the retention time without raising the time it takes to perform a search. I'd like to have indefinite hashtag search.
@picofarad

graf,
@graf@poa.st avatar

@r000t @picofarad alright leave this with me for a bit and ill see what i can do, probably have something to quote tonight or in the early am. datacenter is in liberty lake, WA

graf,
@graf@poa.st avatar

@r000t @picofarad bandwidth limits? ECC ram or no?

r000t,
@r000t@ligma.pro avatar

@graf
I don't think I'll need more than 1TB of transfer, collection always happens away from the database to prevent IP blocking.

ECC is preferred but not a hard requirement. I'll probably WAL replicate the database to my house.
@picofarad

graf,
@graf@poa.st avatar

@r000t @picofarad and 55 or less, yeah?

r000t,
@r000t@ligma.pro avatar

@graf
Mhm. Though for $55 I'd definitely want nicer specs.

I'm making new crypto wallets for as:Public to accept donos tomorrow.
@picofarad

graf,
@graf@poa.st avatar

@r000t @picofarad well for 55$ you'd be looking at Intel i5-10500T with 32GB DDR4 and 2x1 u.2 NVMe therabouts. I'll have to check with the owner, he's not answered me yet but with ECC I might be able to swing E3-1245 v5 or E3-1285 v6 tier with 32GB ECC. it depends what they have in stock tbh

graf,
@graf@poa.st avatar

@r000t @picofarad owner asking if the 2x1TB is a hard requirement or if 2TB or greater NVMe works

r000t,
@r000t@ligma.pro avatar

@graf
I really want RAID-1 if I'm going to take this seriously, ya know?
@picofarad

graf,
@graf@poa.st avatar

@r000t @picofarad i was talmbout subdomains but i used to run the biggest relay (relay.fedi.agency) but turned it off. if i turn it back on like 1500-1600 should eventually resub automatically, i think

r000t,
@r000t@ligma.pro avatar

@graf
Um.... Right now a:P is meant to be a relay client I'd have to look at what changes I'd need to make for it to be a relay server. I don't think I'd actually have it send statuses back out, sounds like a lot of traffic.
