i wrote this about my reading habits a decade ago but it's still basically true

If I feel disappointed or tricked by the author — i.e., I invested a lot of time in the book, I expected to be interested, but it became useless — it will get one or two stars. If I didn’t read enough of the book to make a fair assessment, or if I disliked it but knew going in that I wasn’t the target audience, I drop it off my queue without rating. If I am experimenting with something I don’t typically like, but that came highly recommended, I will defer even adding it until I’m sure I will like it well enough to rate it.

If the book is controversial (religious, political, etc.) I will rarely write a text review. I typically will throw it back without rating even though I finished it and have an opinion. This is a defense mechanism that is based on the universe of the book’s readers, not about the book itself.

some site writes a clickbait headline and wraps it around the crap story.

I welcome gentle correction if I'm behaving in a way that's hurtful or inconsiderate, but I don't tolerate rudeness or requests that I alter my behavior just because someone doesn't like how often they see my posts. There are plenty of people who are annoying and you can just...ignore them.

#JohnMastodon has bequeathed us the mute button. it is not your fault if someone else can't sort out its usage. i am majorly bugged by all manner of things and john sends them to file 13 for me. there are hundreds of people who are known to piss me off, so muted, and legions who i don't know about yet.

unless it's personal, in which case i block or report. and that was personal. just saying.

Just got the call from State Farm that this is the last renewal of our home insurance. We have a year (which was either nice of them or regulated, not sure which) to find an alternative. I’m thinking that maybe we should require Exxon and PGE to buy us all home insurance as part of a climate change adaptation.

i have for the longest time had the ⏚ symbol in my pseudo. this is the electrical ground symbol, but also that of soulèvements de la terre, a french environmental activist group. when the government nearly banned them, i added ⚖, which i intended to be read as 'justice for soulèvements de la terre'. while they remain under heavy state pressure, they evaded a full ban. so i now add ✨​ to my profile; this is intended to be read 'justice for glitter; soulèvements de la terre'

@amberage once the flood of direct-to-consumer adverts came — 'ask your doctor if this $1m drug is right for you' — i can imagine doors shutting in their minds. while it's maddening to those of us who are intelligent and can sift real information from ai slop and late-night infomercials, i cannot say i'd end up less contemptuous than them

i'm recently back from new orleans and my package has arrived from the gallery! the satchmo spray can is a literal empty paint can that is itself spray-painted and wrapped in a street art design of hometown hero louis armstrong. it's by josh wingerter, https://joshwingerter.art/ . the girly steampunk piece, by janice mccarthy, was basically forced on me by @aemarielle 's sorcière as a companion piece. she's convinced that with this, she can master time as well as matter. resistance would be futile.

a decorated spray-paint can by new orleans artist josh wingerter. the can is empty with the nozzle removed. it has been spray-painted yellow with a street art-style label affixed around it, depicting louis armstrong and his trumpet against a background reading 'satchmo'.

I’m sorry I haven’t personally hyped anyone on here for . I didn’t even know it was happening until yesterday & I was not mentally prepared. Been feeling really frustrated lately with my inability to get just ONE song finished—it’s taken me over a month now to record/comp vocals (and I’m still not finished) and just depressed about the state of the music industry and the world in general.

It probably doesn’t help that I need to eat some food.
