i first filed this on , where it was accepted and thrown away without explanation. which is why i continue to become disenamoured of the platform. but i told @grimalkina i'd share science tidbits from this cat book.

The fear of artificial life is intimately tied up with the word robot itself, which first appeared in the 1921 science fiction play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots), written by the Czech author Karel Čapek. In the play, artificial people—robots—are produced in a factory by the Rossum company. Eventually the robots, who can think for themselves, rise up in rebellion and exterminate almost all of humanity.… The word robot was derived from the Czech roboti, which refers to a serf-like forced laborer.

🎵 Post music made for—or featured in—movies...along with what you’re drinking. 🎶

Bonus points if someone who made the film helped make the song!

🍷 Charlie Chaplin ‘The Kid’ + Sidecar🍸

Video of an older Charlie Chaplin conducting an orchestra. I believe his fly is zipped, his shoes are not tied together and he's not doing that pancake bit Yes he composed this and many others.

nat king cole, l-o-v-e, used in the 1998 version of parent trap (you know, the one introducing lindsay lohan)

the song is used in nearly its entirety over the opening credits and establishing scenes, with just one cut in the middle and very minimal overlaid dialogue. three solid minutes of nat.

Bookshop West Portal just sent out an email asking people to tell SFMTA not to make any changes to the streets at West Portal Station because it would ruin their business so I guess I’m never buying anything there ever again. I can’t believe 4 people JUST died there and they actually typed up an email that said this and hit “send”: “we believe limited SFMTA resources should be directed toward the already-identified high accident sites in the city. West Portal is not one of them.” They also take a potshot at the Valencia bike lane using disproven stats, and try to use the elderly and disabled as a cudgel against traffic safety improvements.

Also, they keep talking about the tragedy of a handful of parking spaces going away, when they’re along multiple transit lines. I have only ever arrived at their bookshop via transit. Do they actually have any stats showing that only people who drive buy books there? Or is it that entitled drivers are more likely to make conversation about parking (or lack thereof)?

"As a leading craft beer gastropub, a third of our sales might come from delivery... the entire experience of The Monk’s Kettle has now been transformed from a welcoming place where you hang out with friends in a fun atmosphere…to eating a lukewarm burger and fries in your apartment."

pootriarch,

@scott i think people as a culture have given up on interacting in public. people decided they just didn't want to leave the house and didn't want to be told to. some over covid concerns, some just got used to no-pants workplaces. small business is killed by less foot traffic and no real rent accommodations (i hate saying 'small business' as it's an air-quote moderate dog whistle, but here i believe it to be true). from a zoning and planning perspective, we built this city for a certain density and traffic pattern, foot and car. when the foot traffic dies out, your built environment doesn't match usage. so people fill that space in ways other people don't like and they bring cops and they bring dogs ‘planters’ &c
