@macrumors kinda wild that giant floating app windows are being paired with even more giant UI controls, somehow resulting in vastly less real estate to work with. So many scrolling toolbars!!
I thought chunky buttons designed for touch screens had ruined a lot of interfaces, but this is next level 😂
@macrumors it’s a very scary law, but hard to miss the irony of Apple complaining about someone else having too much power, especially this week. It’s like when Spotify and Epic accuse Apple of having too much power and treating people unfairly… they’re all spot on, but massively hypocritical 😂
Do you think Apple Is acting in good faith with their App Store changes for the EU? Andrew presents both side of the argument in our new YT Video. Which side are you on?
@appleinsider LMAO Apple are deliberately going out of their way to make the experience as horrific as they can possibly get away with. It’s nothing but bitter, entitled corporate greed. I’ve seen them for what they are for years - hopefully this opens some more people’s eyes!
@macrumors I still don’t believe this was ever a thing. They’ve made all that fancy CarPlay software and are giving it away for any vehicle manufacturer to integrate. It would have been like them giving away iOS a few years before the iPhone launched: insane. There’s no way a car is coming. It’d be an absolutely ludicrous market to enter into.
Vision Pro is a VR headset without controllers to play VR games, a media headset without support from the top streaming services, and a ‘spatial computer’ that can only run [some] iPad apps.
@stroughtonsmith I’m excited to try it. But I predict that once I’ve tried it, that itch will be scratched, and I won’t really feel any longer term need for it.
But I guess I’ll just have to wait and find out (could be waiting a while here in the UK 😭)
@daringfireball you may be right that Apple has no intention of charging commission for Mac apps, but they will absolutely intend to replace Macs with iDevices eventually.
iPhones and iPads are rapidly catching up to the performance of laptops and desktops. In the not-too-distant future, buying a laptop in addition to these is gonna be redundant.
@stroughtonsmith there are so many big players that still can’t even be bothered to make iPad or Watch apps. There’s no way they’re making Vision apps any time soon.
@appleinsider fuck I hate arguments like this so much. It’s the logic of a 5 year old. It’s the same as when people say “oh you want sideloading? Buy an Android 🤪”
There’s like 1000 different considerations when picking your favourite platform, and every platform is far from perfect. People are allowed to push for their favourite platforms to become better - yes, even if that means copying features from competing platforms.
@macrumors honestly I don’t know how touch screens in cars haven’t resulted in an exponential increase in road accidents tbh. Seems like horrendous UX.
Ben Thompson gives a detailed breakdown of the sentiment I shared yesterday that Google lost the Epic case by pretending to be open.
Apple is up front that they are a closed platform. Consumers and developers know this when they choose iOS.
Google markets Android as an open platform to consumers and developers but then uses OEM contracts and constantly changing rules to effectively make Google Play and its in-app billing as the only effective choices.
Github has declared that while “GitHub was founded on Git, today it is re-founded on Copilot”.
I don’t write code regularly on the side anymore but I’m curious about whether this is Microsoft corporate hype or if LLM-based coding assistance will be as impactful to software developers as was the seismic shift that was Open Source & hosted git.
@carnage4life having been using copilot since the beginning of the year, it’s unreliable, inconsistent, and far from perfect.
But it’s been noticeably improving in that time, and it increasingly blows my mind when it gets stuff right. I type a comment or function name and it just finishes the rest, often perfectly producing exactly what I needed in a couple of seconds.
Definitely a game changer with huge potential in my experience, but I hope it continues to massively improve.
@9to5Mac pretty sure those dreams were crushed several years ago when they discontinued all the big screen versions without a replacement.
It doesn’t take 2+ years of R&D to go “make that but 3 inches bigger” 🤷♂️
