If you were to pick one web development blog post that played a huge part in changing or influencing how you build on the web—which blog post would it be?

rem,
@rem@front-end.social avatar

@zachleat a lot of Dean Edwards' work, specifically around Base2: http://dean.edwards.name/weblog/2007/03/yet-another/

Not that I think it would make useful reading these days, some decade and a half later.

@rem so Rem, if I would, hypothetically speaking, entertain attending FFconf this year is there a doggy daycare or something similar fun in Brighton that @lumi could attend while I soak in brain-massaging and wholesome talks all day? (I'd assume bringing her to the cinema is a no-go, but given the location that's kinda understandable)

rem,
@rem@front-end.social avatar

@flaki @lumi short answer is, I'm not sure. Longer answer is: I'll find out and get back to you 👍

Have you heard about @scope?

It’s an upcoming way to scope the reach of your CSS selectors, allowing you to move away from methodologies such as BEM because you no longer need to name those in-between elements.

It’s coming to Chrome 118, so let’s take a look …

rem,
@rem@front-end.social avatar

@bramus what would be better (for devs) (and by "better" I mean simpler to grok and therefore adopt): at-scope or nested selectors?

I guess sub question is: is there a cleaner backward compat? (I used nested selectors without build during dev in chrome, then had a build script upon deploy that overwrites the stylesheet un-nesting the selectors for better/FF support)

rem,
@rem@front-end.social avatar

@bramus I suspect, that the general understanding of those differences isn't fully clear (it doesn't help that "scope" as an English word, overlaps in meaning - to me - what nesting is effectively doing too).

I've not used at-scope, but the times I wrote css-in-js I'd be using nesting principles. I guess I'm saying I'm much more familiar with nesting and have never really needed BEM so am not familiar with what at-scope does.

I'm sure I'm the only one, but it's worth asking:

Is anyone else blocked from pasting text into whatapps web (in Firefox)?

I can copy and paste text inside whatsapp, but I can't copy text from anywhere else into whatsapp, it's doing my head in.

rem,

@iamdtms I have. I ended up opening devtools and updating the textContent field. Worked...

There is a developer that famously does custom avatar drawings and for the life of me I cannot remember their name. Help?

Update: it is @reverentgeek!

rem,
@rem@front-end.social avatar

@zachleat I've been wanting to commission an 8 bit low palette version of my avatar for quite a while (so I can insert into games, or etch on to PCBs because I'm an EGO MANIAC!!!)

My team and I just collectively scored 14 out of 25 on this very fun test. Hire us (https://neighbourhood.ie) for your above average JS needs ;D — https://jsisweird.com

@janl I shan't say how many I got right, because it's terrible. But in my defence, I'm more familiar with sensible JavaScript :D

How, after all these years, do UK cinema websites not published when the movie is finished?

Sure, it's 109 minutes long (which, yes, I'll translate that to hours and minutes because I'm sure your developers couldn't work it out), but then you pad with god knows how many car adverts -- I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT TIME TO PICK UP THE KIDS!!!!

Is it possible for LEDs to burn out, not burn out like they don't work anymore, but burn out like, really pale?

I've bought the PCBs and parts to make a modded Gameboy camera (that allows for two custom ROMs on the camera) (video demo here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPt7L-iHDZM)

I've got 3 available but it also requires that you have a GB Camera (as I have to harvest).

I'm not selling these, but splitting costs (but I'll build it for you), which is £16 (plus any postage/paypal fees). If you're interested, just ping me - first come, etc.

Lots of games on playdate but this one gets the most time from me https://social.panic.com/@playdate/110816296607861843

rem,
@rem@front-end.social avatar

@andy been meaning to ask how you're getting on with the playdate. Mine arrives around now (or in the next couple of days).

I've got an idea for a game, but still trying to sketch the software mechanics in JS, then I'm wary the physical mechanics might not quite work (it would use the arm)

rem,
@rem@front-end.social avatar

@andy yeah that's been the consistent criticism I've heard for the PD. There's a tiny voicing in my head that's like "I could open it and try to add a backlight", but after a 3 year wait, I'm not sure it's worth the risk!!!

Looking for recommendations of bloggers (people!) who write about web components.

I'm also interested to know if anyone has a hot take on why it's taken a decade to get traction (long content, not twoot replies).

Send me your links!!! 🙏

rem,

@seldo @westbrook just theory, but wouldn't the bigger websites employ significantly more developers, this website size would roughly equate to developer pool base...

Finishing up the latest order of Game Boy. I've got some DMGs left, but have also added 4 unmodified Game Boy Pockets @ £40: https://retro.remysharp.com/ (also got some custom shells for DMGs coming up)

Does anyone else have Firefox (on MacOS) spike the CPU all the time?

I feel like my CPU fan is constantly triggering on and it's nearly always FF.

I've gotten very comfortable with FF and not sure I want to jump back to Chrome (though I do use Chrome for client dev)

Tickets are on sale: https://2023.ffconf.org

More importantly, we have a scholarship programme that we've been running for years where we cover: ticket, travel and hotel (as required): https://ffconf.org/scholarship/

Please share this with ppl who would benefit 🙏

Wondering why midjourney defaults to pictures of white women when it doesn't understand.

I tried "gunpei" (because of a game I was trying to clone) which looked pretty cool (first pic), but wondered why it was a woman.

I tried "remy" and I got women. I tried mashing the keyboard and I got women…

4 images of women generated from the letters "remy"
4 women generated from the keyboard mash that is "fiejwjdiso"

Every time JavaScript is used to load an image on a web site (instead of using JavaScript for what it's good for and using the fucking lazy attribute), a puppy gets slapped with a catfish.

True fact.

Devs, think of the puppies.
