Bought some shorts on Vinted. After wearing them for a week, I realised there was something in one of the pockets.

It was a tooth.

Proper grim.

Which of them have you NEVER used?

I always had the feeling that there's rather too many of these attribute selectors, and that they were optimized for a use case that was cancelled a long time ago.

OK, URLs. But other than that?

Just tried a new version of timezone lookup from referring IP, this version is supposed to include the correct "wall clock" offset: https://ip2tz.isthe.link/v2

Let me know if it's right or more importantly…wrong.

(If it's right, the solution was 2 lines…)

New on the blog: I'm writing a new talk and I'd love to do it at some more events this year.

I'm breaking the mould of CSS-focused talks to do a more design related talk, all about how important pre-production is in guaranteeing a great UX that works for everyone.

@andy my only feedback: I feel like "guaranteeing" isn't really a word.

Do as you will with that…

rem,
@rem@front-end.social avatar

@sarajw @andy it's likely I'm just looking at the letters and thinking there's too many "e"s to be real.

That's my litmus test for made up things.

I've accidentally been paying for a midjourney subscription for several months (after trying out to play with images with the kids).

So now, I've started feeding spam email subject titles into it. Annoyingly I can't only generate 1 image, so I have to upscale the first one.

Weird thread incoming…

What an absolute headache this has been, but I've finally managed to restore one of my micro services - getting the timezone for a visitor: https://ip2tz.isthe.link/

It takes the requesting IP (or via query string) and finds the tz in 3.1m records, very fast and without a db.

rem,
@rem@front-end.social avatar

@janl I'm thinking you have ipv6? I realised last night it doesn't support it at all (which I'll fix!)

rem,
@rem@front-end.social avatar

@janl I've just updated to echo out the found ip - would you mind testing again and pasting what you see?

rem,
@rem@front-end.social avatar

@janl cheers fella - coding now to see if I can solve it!

rem,
@rem@front-end.social avatar

@janl I've got that ipv6 as tz -7:00 - which…I'm assuming is totally wrong!?

rem,
@rem@front-end.social avatar

@janl so no James Bond island hopping for you then! Right-o, definitely wrong, as expected :D

I've been writing code for what's essentially a simple problem, but requires a very large database AND I don't want to put the data in an online SASS db. So, yeah, constraints.

Works perfectly offline, but really doesn't fly online. I'd forgotten how annoying code can be.

@simon am I missing something or is it just not straightforward to put a 300mb sqlite db on S3 (or something) and then query from a lambda function?

I'm looking at horse-shoeing-in the httpvfs method, but I thought I'd ask you first!

rem,
@rem@front-end.social avatar

@simon yeah, didn't work. Or at least, not for the targets I wanted (specifically netlify). Deno module needs to write (even though it's only reading), and the node module binary isn't compatible (and the wasm port is apparently too slow). Painfully difficult if you want to use one of the "nice" hosting platforms.

I'm currently looking at restoring a couple of projects (specifically https://webmention.app) - but I'm loathed to deploy to Vercel again after it banned every deployment in around 12 hours of notice and the lack of visibility and control I get when there's a spike that pushes you over the limits…

I'm currently seeing if there's ways I can refactor the code for Netlify functions.

I've been wanting to see if this was possible… and it totally was. I can play the Switch Gameboy games … with a Gameboy (which, frankly, is pointless, but hey!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9gX9qlfynE

There's a lot of strong submissions to the @ffconf 2023 CFP.

If you're new or fresh to the industry, or an old hand who has stories to tell, please take a look at our CFP and our promise to all our speakers: https://ffconf.org/articles/cfp/

Somehow I'm finally in the land of hand crafting SVG.

It's not pretty, but it's getting there.

rem, to random
@rem@front-end.social avatar

Does SVG have the capability to make this from 3 shapes (two diamonds and one line) where the positioning is actually responsive?

I keep thinking it must (whilst also acknowledging that my knowledge is getting rather stale!)

rem,
@rem@front-end.social avatar

@andy yeah, but… can't SVG also contain CSS (this bit could be where I'm totally off), and thusly, pull off that method from within a single image (that could be used as a background or as a img el)?

anatudor, to webdev

How would you code this with:

⚠️ 1 element, no pseudos
⚠️ no SVG, no images in general save for CSS gradients
🚫 no JS
⚠️ no lists of values of length > 8
⚠️ same amount of compiled CSS regardless of whether we have 6 or 25 bars
⚠️ at most 7 CSS declarations

rem,
@rem@front-end.social avatar

@anatudor am I allowed one background image (potentially of a chart...)?
