I got my election assignment yesterday. I'm now an election worker. Not a volunteer. You get money for it. Not a huge amount. My thinking is that I have students who think the last presidential election was stolen. Well, shit, I think, I might as well go in and be able to tell them from personal experience how elections are run.

As best I can tell, it's by checklist. Checklists read aloud.

When I worked in an archive (back in the day), I remember our boss said that in the case of water damage (maybe just for the books--I can think of items that ice would damage) that we would freeze them so conservators would be able to dry them in a controlled way. I was but a humble grad student but having first crack at the collections was a thrill. :)

I was not able to find a penguin kimono for my mother (apparently there are not a lot of penguins in Japan--except for this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxtvrdP8an0), but I did find a crane-themed one. I intend to sell them to her as "the penguins of the east."

I have never bought a house. I never really felt that my head was far enough above water to purchase anything. I am still hesitant about buying. I harbor no illusions that anyone involved is trying to do the best thing for me. I qualify for a truly stupidly large loan. I was told to go high and fast when I make an offer. I think there are a lot people circling and trying to consume me. Any thoughts? Advice?

And another thing. It seemeth me weird that I would get a 30 year mortgage at almost 50. I have hopes, of course, but that seems...rather optimistic.

I was looking at a property tonight. A realtor had told me that it was "in a bad neighborhood" which they told me they shouldn't say. But I wanted to see the property. Lots of diverse families out and about in the neighborhood (is this what was meant by a "bad neighborhood"?). Lots of nice cars in the parking lots. The roads and grounds of the surrounding property were well kept. It was fine. Totally fine.

I'm asking for a tour, I think.

@krelnik Inseem to remember you telling me about what has to be the most satisfying job: throwing computer hard drives into an industrial shredder for security's sake. I have about a billion old PCs that are just taking up space. I'd like to get rid of/recycle them securely. How would I do that?

As I am sifting through old boxes of things I have not used in...ever... anything that is not labelled is gone. Making backups of the others. I mean, except for the floppy and zip disks. Those, if labelled (and are not the Works for PowerMac disks that I apparently have), will be saved for some reason.
