Anyone using the new "Add to Dock" feature to make Mac web apps?

I'm curious which websites folks are using with it – and may or may not be making for them 👀

rjfaas,
@rjfaas@mastodon.social avatar

@matthewcassinelli I’ve been using it for Threads and Bluesky - have to reload them every once in while but they’re good. Coursera works but not as well.

My iPad mini is the Freeform device I keep on my desk for sketching and planning, but I find an A-series chip just isn't powerful enough for comfortable iPad usage. Everything feels sluggish and I/O-y, and it's not just the lack of a ProMotion display. I would really appreciate an M-series iPad Pro mini, but we're still not heading that direction

rjfaas,
@rjfaas@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith same - smaller doesn’t equal non-pro or inferior. That’s been my issue since I had a first gen mini (and why I never bought a newer one despite preferring the form factor)

I don't believe Vision Pro needs to be updated annually or every 18 months. It's price and manufacturing volume alone prevents that.

Maybe once this thing is priced closer to a 12.9-inch iPad Pro and produced in nearly as much volume would such a cycle make sense. Apple might sell 1 million units by 2026.

Would Apple really turn around in 2026 and ask everyone that just purchased a Vision Pro to do it again? Would the market want that?

By waiting until early 2027 it means the early adopters are ready for the new hardware and will upgrade, even at that price. It also means holdouts waiting for 2nd gen hardware will be in line. Do this too soon and you're burning the first-gen adopters.

I'd also argue that the M2 is more than capable of living through to 2027. My M1 iPad Pro released in April 2021 and hasn't even stuttered once. Vision Pro is basically an iPad Pro and M2 is a better M1 -- 3 years should be fine given iPad's software history.

@matt @HilliTech but that was sold more as a luxury fashion item more than as a functional tool - very different market

Thinking about the cracks in some Vision Pros (and my own recent look at the history of first gen products from Apple), I’m curious about how many first gen products from Apple you all may have had requiring warranty repair/replacement?

For me the list is original iMac, first gen iPod and first iPhone.

Boosts appreciated.

Random thought, but I wonder if Apple will make Spotlight their main AI/search tool.

Apple Spotlight sounds cool and doesn't have Siri's baggage.

I think I need to figure out how to manage my feed here more. I can blaze through Threads and Bluesky in minutes because there are so few posts. But Threads is starting to depress me anyway. (Bluesky is OK for me, mostly because most of Twitter comics decamped there.)

I still prefer this place but the feed has so much stuff in it that I always end up waaaaay behind or reading in reverse.

Christian Selig makes the YouTube Vision Pro app that Google wouldn’t

Google isn’t putting out a YouTube app for Apple’s headset, so a third-party developer Christian Selig, who was behind the now defunct Reddit app Apollo, stepped in to make one. Juno costs $4.99 and is already available from Apple’s App Store.

I started thinking about this a bit more, and I really think it could be pretty great. With the “focus engine” that lets AppleTV hop between click targets, one could easily pop around a screen of widgets and select music/podcasts, photos, next tv show, etc. And a simple scroll down could bump you into the current AppleTV UI. Let’s do this, Apple!

(apologies for the quick mock-up, just a Keynote with some Figma stock icons. I have to get these things out of my head) https://hachyderm.io/@jimmylittle/111834930371024851
