Murder on the Mississippi:

„The German Version
In 1986 then video game journalist Boris Schneiderundertook one of the first documented fan translation efforts:
Over the course of one weekend (!) he single-handedly cracked and translated the C64 version of Murder on the Mississippi into German by using a simple hex editor and a self-written disk editor. He then sent "his" translated version of the game to Activision, which they officially released in Germany.“

@futurewas8bit Will you ever be selling the deluxe Atari A/V mod again?

I would have use for at least one... got an unmodded console here.

My childhood trauma was watching "The Tripods" on German TV (ZDF) and not getting a third season! About 15 years later I finally read the books and could get some closure. And now I have the DVDs! Did you watch this series back then? What did you think about it?

root42,
@root42@chaos.social avatar

@daputz @kurth I watched it with the German dub, obviously, being a primary school kid, and I will rewatch it in the same context. I'll take it as it is: a mid 80s BBC production. This, ALF and TNG defined my first couple of years at school. :)

root42,
@root42@chaos.social avatar

@dec_hl No, it doesn't exist! The BBC canceled the show!

So the batteries in my ran empty. This was the opportunity to ditch Tristam Island for now. The inventory mechanics were a little too annoying for me. So… how about a classic? Bronze by Emily Short. It is slow as molasses, because it’s written in Inform7, but still works fine. Even got the compass rose in the upper right corner!

@jimblimey cool. What toolchain are you using? That’s a Z80 target, right?

Echt gut gemacht.

@jon Full stop. The bike rack problem is a solved problem. These are cheap, easy to install, and will last ages.

@emanuel OCS! But I think they do a palette switch for the interface area, to get more colors on screen.

I decided to work on something a bit lighter (literally) and fun today and refurbished a 1975 scientific calculator made by #Commodore. It still works (except for the rechargeable battery which thankfully was removed by the previous owner before it could do any harm)! #RetroCalculatoring #InTheLabDoingStuff

@janbeta Are those the little bubble LED modules, that HP also used a lot in their equipment?

In my abundant free time, I want to make a phone app optimized for taking photo or video of CRTs, with quick access to shutter speeds of 1/25, 1/29.97, 1/30, 1/50, 1/59.94, and 1/60 of a second. I've tried so many camera apps with manual settings and each one has annoyances or too many settings.

root42,
@root42@chaos.social avatar

@polpo great idea! Plus maybe video mode..? Plus a 15kHz audio filter. :)

root42,
@root42@chaos.social avatar

@fozztexx @polpo this will explode feature wise. :) But I guess more features can be added over time…

@eazy 2.4 oder 5 GHz? 2.4 ist besser für draußen, da deutlich höhere Reichweite.

Introducing the SMD2000 “Bushfire” - a re-implementation of the #Commodore #Amiga 2000 to a modular, mini-DTX design

root42,
@root42@chaos.social avatar

@dirkdierickx Nice. However... I don't really see the advantage compared to existing A500 recreations. The A2000's biggest selling points were the Zorro slots (of which there are two left, one of which is blocked by the CPU card) and the ISA slots, which have been cut. Since most people will build up a more or less static system, the need to replace the Agnus board or CPU board will be rare. Instead I would go with an EATX A2000: https://github.com/jasonsbeer/Amiga-2000-EATX
All A2000 features in ATX form!

root42,
@root42@chaos.social avatar

@dirkdierickx true! And it looks very cute with the minimal board size.

Just got caught up on The Discourse of CPU design and this article: https://hackaday.com/2024/03/21/why-x86-needs-to-die/

Let me skip to the chase - it argues that x86 is shit because it's got variable-length encoding, is out-of-order, and does speculative execution. It then says ARM and RISC-V are much better.

Er... except they also do all those things in the fast chips. Which the writer clearly didn't know. So they're not just wrong, they're ignorant.

After getting the and running again, the next device to repair is the .
It had and on the main board and the power supply is beyond repairworthiness. I'd replace the latter with a RD-35 with 5 and 12 volt output.
One was rusty, a few traces needed and five looked bad. Hope the black hybrid chip is still okay.
Sadly, the lower read head seems to be broken, my work might've been in vain.

the worst corrosion on the main board. a rusty diode and a few other rusty pins.
the same section after cleaning and replacing the diode and five resistors (the blue ones). the fixed traces have been covered by soldermask again
the mechanics schowing the read heads. sadly, the lower head is reading open circuit where it shouldn't, indicating broken coils.

@rommudoh does a regular format using OPEN and N0:… work?
What does OpenCBM say?
