Just wondering what people think of eSIMS? I'm considering switching to one. I know there are several advantages and disadvantages. From what I've been reading, it'll be much easier to transfer an eSIM to a new device. At least that's how it seems by reading the instructions on my carrier's site.

liamerven,

@rooktallon @rowdyamerican I've had to do a lot of phone setups lately. Esims are fantastic when they transfer correctly, but a nightmare otherwise.

@liamerven @rowdyamerican @rooktallon I was totally shocked when my new phone had a Sim card tray with a bottom. I tried to punch it out three times before I realized it was supposed to be there. I thought it was packing material.

I'm not a big Telegram user. I have a couple of questions. Is it possible to join a group using the iOS Telegram app? If so, how is it done? I don't see any group options.

NightDrake,

@munchkinbear @TSchulte @bmoore123 @rowdyamerican My only issue with WhatsApp on the computer is that I will leave someone a message and sometimes no matter which headset mic I use there have been times where part of voice messages mute the mic. I can't pinpoint when it's going to happen to try to fix the problem. It never happens on Unigram or Tweesecake when leaving voice messages though.

bmoore123,
@bmoore123@disabled.social avatar

@NightDrake @munchkinbear @TSchulte @rowdyamerican never had that problem. using a mixier and a desktop mic but I don't think which audio device you use should make a difference.

It is now official. I just paid for my school reunion. I'll have to stay at the school this time around, but that can't be helped. Next time I'll plan ahead and stay at one of the hotels. Either way, I'm looking forward to it. Should have a good time connecting with old friends as well as making new ones.

@rowdyamerican have fun. that thing is fun even though I didn't go to that school

The OKO beta in Canada will end on Sunday. The app is very good. It still needs a lot of work if they want it to be useful in Canada. I've had some very good results with it, but I've also had some very bad ones. It seems like it works fine in the States. I've spoken to some O and M instructors and a lot of them aren't very happy with it in its current state. I don't know if we'll ever see OKO come to Canada.

rowdyamerican,

@bmoore123 I believe that's one of the main reasons that O and M instructors would not recommend it at this point. They wouldn't want a person to totally rely on it and not use their own skills. Something like that could lead to a very bad outcome. I think most of us know better than to just rely on an app, but it just takes one person and the whole thing could turn out very badly. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Canada get this app. It just needs work before it's released to the public.

bmoore123,
@bmoore123@disabled.social avatar

@rowdyamerican yes, although people need to understand the limits of technology in this context. I think that was the reason ADP would not cover gps devices because they figured blind people were too stupid to understand the limitations and they had to ensure we were safe!

rowdyamerican, to random

Why would someone repost their own posts? Am I missing something? I just don't see the point in it.

jbigham,
@jbigham@hci.social avatar

@rowdyamerican same reason they wrote it the first time? esp on mastodon where there's no algorithm

I'm glad we finally have the opportunity to beta test OKO in Canada. I have tested it at 3 intersections so far and it is working perfectly. Hopefully after the beta test, this app will come to Canada.

douglawlor,

@rowdyamerican @simon This tool is so useful I would happily pay for a subscription if that's what it takes to get it here. I just love the idea of having my very own audible pedestrian system in my pocket!

simon,

@douglawlor @rowdyamerican If there's no server component I'd rather have it as a lifetime option. Subscriptions can go away. I get that it's better for the company, but I'd sooner pay years in advance than subscribe to something. If there is a significant server component, subscription all the way.

There is a lot of miss information going around in the blind iPhone group on Facebook. Some people are saying if you're totally blind you can't set up face ID on your own. They are saying you need sighted help. This is not true. Other people are saying that the new stolen device protection mode is not worth using. They are basically saying because you have to use face ID or your fingerprint to validate some features that it would be too much trouble for a totally blind person to use.

@keao @Pawpower @cary5871 @5021_strong @NightDrake @TSchulte @rowdyamerican I don’t mean to stick my nose in where it doesn’t belong, but have you tried the bypass scripts? I’m only suggesting this, because Microsoft has mentioned it themselves.

evilcookies98,
@evilcookies98@dragonscave.space avatar

@cary5871 @TSchulte @5021_strong @Pawpower @NightDrake @rowdyamerican and then you have those of us who are not so much anti-new technology as we are anti-excessive junk that Microsoft feels like cramming in for no reason. Looking at you copilot.

Regarding my last boost. I hope Canadians will sign up for this beta. They need at least 100 testers before the beta will begin.

bmoore123,
@bmoore123@disabled.social avatar

@rowdyamerican I signed up but I thought the city had to install lights which will work with this thing.

rowdyamerican, to random

I'm really not trying to stir anything up. Honestly just genuinely curious. I'm wondering why so many people are leaving the dragonscave? I'm a little out of the loop.

munchkinbear,

@rowdyamerican TLDR. back in September, mastodon said they'd stop maintaining or supporting version 4.0 of the software as October 1, 2023, some forks, hometown among them, were still running 4.0 as their base at that time, while 4.1, and 4.2 were available and 4.3 is currently in development. (available as alpha at this time). It's been four month's, since 4.0 was sunsetted, and hometown has been extremely silent, (five if you count the 30 days they had prior to 4.0 end of life), and administrators were being highly recommended back in November when hometown clearly didn't give a hoot, to move away from hometown as it was clear the maintainers of the fork did not wish to do the right thing and upgrade the mastodon core their fork was based on, to at least 4.1, or to really keep up, 4.2. This has serious security implications as both mastodon 4.1 and especially 4.2 and even 4.3Alpha have security fixes that were not backported to the 4.0 branch before it was sunsetted in October. So some users, as is their right and since the federverse is decentralized, chose to move themselves to an instance who's software was more up to date.

simon,

@munchkinbear @rowdyamerican Ok, but @admin has already said they're addressing that. Kinda feels like everyone is just ignoring that part LOL

Anyone know if you still have to have an adapter or a screen to use a Mac Mini? I know you used to need one or the other or VoiceOver wouldn't work properly.

bmoore123,
@bmoore123@disabled.social avatar

@jfayre @rowdyamerican yes, forgot about this. A mouse is a must have or you get annoying dialogues which are hard to get out of asking you to connect one. It can be done but it is a pain.

rowdyamerican,

@bmoore123 @jfayre Thanks for the info guys. Now I know what I'm in for. Not sure if I'm getting the mini or not I'm just keeping my options open.

My daughter is happily using her new white iPhone 15 Pro. We had no problems activating the sim. I'm still holding out for the 16 Pro. Even after messing around with the 15. I love that action button and the USB C port.

I think it's great that we have so much choice for GPS apps. I find it a little confusing that we now have Soundscape and Soundscape Community. If you download both of them, they both show up as Soundscape on your home screen.

ppatel,
@ppatel@mstdn.social avatar

@rowdyamerican I thought the Scottish Tech Army one was going to be combined with the Soundscape Community one.

rowdyamerican,

@ppatel It is OpenScape that is combining with Soundscape community.

The July update for the Hable is out. It seems to be a solid update. I don't understand why it was released before the documentation. I'm on the Hable list and saw the sample manual that was posted. If a person isn't on that list they would have no way of knowing any of the new commands. The website says that the tutorials and documentation is currently being updated. I think they should have released the update and documentation at the same time. This is not a criticism. This is just my opinion.

@rowdyamerican whats new in it?

rowdyamerican, to random

I just found out that I'm the winner of the Canadian Hable challenge. I can't believe I won!!! Somehow I did and I'm happy that it's all mine now.

technolass,

@rowdyamerican Oh wow! That's awesome! Congratulations!

bruce_toews,

@rowdyamerican @technolass When a company says "we're working hard on something", they often mean "We have it on a post-it note marked things to do, urgent. <SMILE>

rowdyamerican, to random

I feel that I need to put this out there. You need a computer in order to downgrade from iOS 17 to iOS 16. Turning off the beta option in settings on your device will not cause your device to downgrade. I'm only putting this out there because several people have asked me if they can downgrade without a computer. Once again, the answer is a definite no!!!!!
