I'm not a big Telegram user. I have a couple of questions. Is it possible to join a group using the iOS Telegram app? If so, how is it done? I don't see any group options.

rowdyamerican,

@TSchulte Thanks. I was afraid that might be the case.

Just received an email from Michael at OKO and I guess hey
Ve completed their analysis of the beta tests many of us were doing and I guess they will be releasing the product within the next few months to the Canadian App Store! Guess I will get to test it out again. Hopefully, this time with better results.

rowdyamerican,

@Montrealmarc Apparently OKO will be out within the next 3 months. I'll be keeping an eye on this. We'll see how it goes. It will need a lot of improvements to work with our lights. Blind people will have to realize that they can't totally rely on it. At least if it hasn't changed very much from the beta. I like OKO I'm not trying to sound negative. I just think it needs a lot of work in order for it to be useful in Canada.

rowdyamerican,

@bmoore123 @Montrealmarc I agree Brian. I sent extensive feedback including intersections that didn't work. I said that I like the app but a lot of work would have to be done to make it useful for Canadians. I have heard several U.S. demos and they don't seem to have the issues that we have here. If they can make OKO work reliably here, I think it will be a great tool to add to the toolbox.

There's something I've encountered with Voice Dream Reader and have never been able to figure out. Sometimes, when I place my finger in the middle of the screen when I have a book open and am at the text, it'll say a certain percentage. But when I go to the bottom of the screen where the position percentage of the book is displayed, it is always a different number. So, I have know idea what the first percentage is indicating. This is when reading the text on screen, as I never use the play button. I'm not bothered by the difference in percentage, I'm just curious as to what that first percentage number means.

rowdyamerican,

@lynnskyi I don’t know if I’m right about this or not. This is how it seems to me though. The percentage at the bottom of the screen seems to move up and down by 5% intervals. The one in the middle of the screen I believe is the exact percentage you are in the book. Whereas the one at the bottom allows you to move forward and backward by 5% intervals. I could be wrong about all of this but this is how I interpret it.

The OKO beta in Canada will end on Sunday. The app is very good. It still needs a lot of work if they want it to be useful in Canada. I've had some very good results with it, but I've also had some very bad ones. It seems like it works fine in the States. I've spoken to some O and M instructors and a lot of them aren't very happy with it in its current state. I don't know if we'll ever see OKO come to Canada.

rowdyamerican,

@bmoore123 I believe that's one of the main reasons that O and M instructors would not recommend it at this point. They wouldn't want a person to totally rely on it and not use their own skills. Something like that could lead to a very bad outcome. I think most of us know better than to just rely on an app, but it just takes one person and the whole thing could turn out very badly. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Canada get this app. It just needs work before it's released to the public.

I'm glad we finally have the opportunity to beta test OKO in Canada. I have tested it at 3 intersections so far and it is working perfectly. Hopefully after the beta test, this app will come to Canada.

rowdyamerican,

@simon I've heard that they are trying to secure funding in Canada and that's apparently a big hurdle. I know they are also worried that the data they are receiving from the U.S. may not be compatible with our traffic signals. From my limited testing so far, I don't think that will be a problem. The beta test only runs until the 18th, so I'll be testing at as many intersections as I can in Toronto.

@bmoore123@disabled.social avatar

we are moving to a new building in the summer. this will mean having to cross my least favorite intersection in the city every day. this sucks! I hope there are some good parts to this new building that was just built.

rowdyamerican,

@bmoore123 @technolass What intersection are you trying to avoid Brian? Just curious.

There is a lot of miss information going around in the blind iPhone group on Facebook. Some people are saying if you're totally blind you can't set up face ID on your own. They are saying you need sighted help. This is not true. Other people are saying that the new stolen device protection mode is not worth using. They are basically saying because you have to use face ID or your fingerprint to validate some features that it would be too much trouble for a totally blind person to use.

rowdyamerican,

@Pawpower I agree. I don’t understand it either. I actually prefer Face ID over touch ID.

I've only done this once, and while it may be a slight inconvenience, switching Mastodon instances should be easy, without you having to do all the work of regaining your followers and friends on your end. There's really absolutely no need to send a bunch of private messages to all of your friends to let them know you're switching accounts. If you do it right, your followers will follow you there automatically once you've imported your account. Personally, I'm not the biggest social media person and I'm happy at the instance I am, so I don't really see a need to move, but for those switching instances, your followers will be notified once you start following them on the new account. That's another less important reason why I choose not to switch. every time someone has switched, I get that notification, and I don't want to do the MastoHop from one instance to another, with my followers getting notifications for each time I've moved, and I'm sure that would get old after a while. Thing is, pick a place that makes you happy and stay in that place. Get used to it. Get comfortable. Slip under the covers and break in that new home for a while before making a hasty decision to move again unless absolutely necessary. Let your mastodon server take care of bringing your followers to you. Think of it as telling the post office you've switched addresses, and give them the new one. They'll just start forwarding your mail directly to you. It's really as easy as that. There's really no need to keep sending DMs for a person to follow you on a new instance because that can also get very old, especially when it's not necessary. Those are just my thoughts. I hope everyone is having a beautiful day! Hugs.

rowdyamerican,

@lynnskyi @desertstar84 I agree. There are times when switching instances is necessary. I'm actually considering a switch myself. I just haven't made that final decision yet.

Anyone know if you still have to have an adapter or a screen to use a Mac Mini? I know you used to need one or the other or VoiceOver wouldn't work properly.

rowdyamerican,

@bmoore123 Thanks Brian. This helps a lot. I know it used to Bebe a problem if you didn’t have something connected.

rowdyamerican,

@bmoore123 @jfayre Thanks for the info guys. Now I know what I'm in for. Not sure if I'm getting the mini or not I'm just keeping my options open.

i must say that the tim Horton's roast beef sandweitch is really quite good but small.

rowdyamerican,

@gtbray I find all of their sandwiches to be a bit on the small side. Maybe my appetite is just too big.

rowdyamerican,

@bruce_toews @gtbray I love Arby's but sadly we don't have any in Toronto. Closest one is Oshawa I think.

I think it's great that we have so much choice for GPS apps. I find it a little confusing that we now have Soundscape and Soundscape Community. If you download both of them, they both show up as Soundscape on your home screen.

rowdyamerican,

@ppatel It is OpenScape that is combining with Soundscape community.
