A quick TIL today: you can listen to a full web page in Mobile Safari by selecting the "Listen to this page" - then accessing the same menu a second time to get controls for the rate of speaking, pause and skip-forwards/skip-backwards https://til.simonwillison.net/ios/listen-to-page

@simon How is the text-to-speech conversion done? Is it local or die Safari send the text to Apple to be converted?

Good morning, and welcome to Enshittification Tuesday. We've got quite a selection for your perusal today, and shockingly it isn't all related to AI.

We've got:

  • Microsoft adds AI spyware at the OS level

  • iTerm2 adds AI spyware at the Terminal level

  • FireTV interface has been sneakily tweaked to automatically subscribe users to new services when downloading certain apps (yes, there's a confirmation screen, but blink and you'll miss it & might get double-subscribed)

@kboyd ummm wait what, iTerm2 and AI?

Someone actually built a Chrome extension to "Hide annoying Google AI Overviews". LOL. Right now it only has 2,000 users, but I wouldn't be surprised if it reaches millions in a few months when SGE (Search Generative Experience) will be rolled out globally. https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/hide-google-ai-overviews/neibhohkbmfjninidnaoacabkjonbahn Duckduckgo is also releasing similar tech using AI .

@nixCraft it would be better to prevent the LLM results from being generated altogether. That would not just save us from the crap but also prevent the emissions being created at all (maybe).

I just found out one actually useful use case for (a.k.a. “AI”).

There is thousands of tonnes of documents from detailing basically everything what happened, who was involved and who participated what and said what.

Feed ALL of that to an LLM and ask it “how can we avoid this happening ever again”. I have a pretty good guess my self but some people aren’t that convinced. Perhaps this is The Key.

To people sounding alarm bells about Mastodon becoming worse, what are you doing to make it better?

It’s one thing to scream “enshittification”. It’s another thing to contribute edification.

If you’re not contributing to the solution then you’re contributing to the problem.

@atomicpoet The world is not binary. By presenting it is a lot of people are alienated.

Someone told me that non-alcoholic Guinness is actually good. I haven’t tried it yet but it’s worth trying.

If it’s not good, at least it will be worth the story because non-alcoholic Guinness is a bizarre concept.

@atomicpoet I just recently visited a small brewery and learned why NA beers usually taste so bad. Alcohol mixes well both with water and fat soluble substances. The latter is basically all the flavors and without alcohol the mix simply does not … mix.

My treasure hunt is still on, even against all the odds 🫣
