The unusual warmth we had earlier this spring really gave the fig trees a push. So many figs!

rudiev,

@riversidebryan they are SO incredibly sweet, and HUGE when they're ripe! Bigger than a golf ball!

Sadly I don't see many Monarch butterflies anymore but I did spot one today, getting some nectar from a butterfly bush

Pro tip for those serious about on a regular basis, especially if you have a segment that's behind a Patreon: pony up a little extra and get a good quality mic. I was trying to get through a guitar gear podcast today and the guest they had on was nearly unintelligible 30% of the time, and the mic quality was subpar for the two hosts...lot of popping, and very grainy/distorted.

It's really getting old when I try to install software that wasn't downloaded through Apple's App store, Mac OS blocks me from installing it because they "can't verify" it.

I know there's a way to get around that, but I shouldn't have to dig through settings and change a bunch of permissions. God this company is so controlling over their ecosystem.

I've been seeing a post go around saying that the Twitter migration was a failure because not 100% of this person's follows on the bird site moved over to Mastodon or Calckey, etc and I can't help but feel that's a gross over-statement and not the best way to gauge the health of the Fediverse. Yes, growth has slowed in terms of new users, but to focus just on that one metric ignores how active the current user base of Mastodon/Calckey/Akkoma currently are. I've been on a variety of instances now, both on Mastodon and Calckey, and the level of engagement is as good as what I experienced on pre-Musk Twitter. And to be honest, those who are unbothered by Elon Musk and decided to stay put, I have no interest in following them. To stay on the bird site at this late stage is an implicit endorsement of Musk's behavior, in my view.

It’s incredibly frustrating to look at a Mastodon profile and not be able to see that person’s followers unless they are certain servers.

rudiev,

@jodmentum there's a setting where individuals can choose whether to display their followers/who they're following or not; I found that keeping it off cut down on the spam I was receiving.

rudiev,

@jodmentum hmm, yeah that's odd. Any ideas, @feditips ?

A few favorite from this past week, from my mom's garden and from the nursery! Rhododendron catawbiense, Summer Crush hydranga, and Goldmound Spirea

Hydrangea blooms opening lime green in the center with pinkish red on the outside edges of the individual florets
Hot pink flower clusters on Spirea Goldmound sit atop chartreuse foliage

And this is why I turn off MFM on CalcKey.

rudiev,

@jcrabapple Ohhhh no 😵‍💫

Listening straight through Chris Isaak's albums and I'll be damned if these aren't the best friggin guitar tones and use of effects I've ever heard in my life (from the analytical side of me); but as a whole, I love the 50s rock/surf vibes; masterful songwriting/arranging as well.

My suggestion to new users is to choose a instance that is ran by an institution bound by rules and legal obligations such as mastodon.social/.online (gGmbH) or instances operated by a registered charitable association. The Mozilla server will likely be a safe choice too. It is furthering centralisation, I’m aware of that, but preferable compared to a privately run instance where admins have arbitrary authority to determine what you can see and how safe your data is. @fediversenews

rudiev,

@choyer @fediversenews the problem with the bigger instances is that, like in the case of Mastodon.social, they often cant keep up with booting spammers and other unsavory characters. I've been on several small instances and it's been by far the better experience for me. Not only do they not attract the bad actors that are attracted to bigger instances, but I've found the admins to be quite responsive.

Best web browsers for ; all the major browsers (desktop and mobile) ranked on how they handle cookies, trackers, scripts, etc.
Looks like LibreWolf, Brave, and Mullvad are the big winners. Would be curious to see where Arc ranks if they get incorporated into this next time the site updates. https://privacytests.org/

rudiev,

@jcrabapple Yeah, Brave seems suspect with the whole wallet thing in particular. Like, why are you asking me to entrust you with my credit card and personal info? Lol, hard pass. Arc has been super fun to use but given that it's based on Chrome, it does make me pause from a privacy standpoint.

Don't know if there are fellow and electronic fans here but I've been finding more great ambient/atmospheric/soundscapes stuff on lately:

  • Warmth
  • Phillip Wilkerson
  • Hammock
  • Black Hill
  • Reinhardt Buhr

And some fantastic electronic stuff as well:

  • Macroflash
  • Oblique Occasions

rudiev,

@jcrabapple Which brewery? I might see if my local bottle shop can order some, I'd like to try it!

Just noticed a new version of rolled out today. Looking through the settings, I see an option to hide news. Does that hide posts with links to news articles?

Something's wrong with me, I'm now checking out my third platform, #Calckey.social 🤪 Have to say the interface there is pretty slick. Lots of customization just like Akkoma
