Hi! :samueldr-1:

If you want to know about the projects I'm working on, look here:

Contacting me? Maybe here, or else:

I may follow back, I may not. I curate my feed heavily to make it consumable. I do not drink from the firehose. I might even follow people and mute their re-whatevers, or them entirely. When I mute, it does not mean I disagree.

If I follow you, I don't expect a follow back.

People will be like, “Why aren’t you on Threads?” And I’ll be like, “What, so I can talk about how I had to do a BIOS reset on my laptop because I screwed up my Haiku install? Mosseri wishes he had users who understood what that last sentence meant.”

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@ernie now I'm curious about that. I'm always curious to hear about bad platform firmware idiosyncrasies. (So I'm more aware about how not to fail when working on my own stuff...)

Since both .io and .ai are popular with tech startups, a good way to predict the subject of the next tech bubble is to look at places that have been previously conquered by the British Empire, and see what ccTLDs they get.

You could compile the Linux kernel on the Voyager 1 in the time it takes to communicate with it.

https://mastodon.laurenweinstein.org/@lauren/112509302331220658

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@ernie what does that mean?

Ignoring other constraints, I don't think it could run enough instructions to complete the build in the about 50 hours roundtrip communication deadline. No?

Picking arbitrary limits of "the fastest computer in 1984" (X-MP/48, theoretical 800 MFLOPS) and an arbitrary "current" "fast" desktop CPU (~6GFLOP / core), and a 12 core CPU crunches through a defconfig Linux in less than an hour, we would get (ignoring how inaccurate this is) 90 hours out best case scenario. And we can be sure it's not a Cray running in there 😅

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@ernie Finally found numbers!

The master clock runs at 4 MHz but the CPU’s clock runs at only 250 KHz. A typical instruction takes 80 microseconds, that is about 8,000 instructions per second.

That sure would take a hot minute to build a kernel (ignoring every other constraints),

Matrix once again is not able to actually do the one thing it ought to do as an instant messenger, quickly and reliably transmit messages.

I know that this is a matrix.org failure this time and I really should move off that server, but on the other hand my motivation for self hosting that pile of misery is not increasing with each of these incidents. Doesn't help that the migration story is still pretty much non existent

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@piegames like I hinted at in a thread of mine, the issue here is that it's federation between silos. This is not useful for the end-users. There is no way to "be yourself", your identity is still tighly coupled to a silo.

I personally think that it shouldn't count as federated when the identities are this tightly coupled to the silo'd operating machinery :/

Did someone hack me and put SMBIOS in my ARM?Though, to be more fair, SMBIOS is not a "BIOS" thing, nor a "PC thing".

When booting using UEFI, the SMBIOS data can be present. U-Boot can be configured (and imo it should be the default) to present information as SMBIOS tables.

My intention initially was to be a goofy jab at using the (perfectly fine) /proc/device-tree info.

Hey, anyone on the NixOS subreddit. Note that no one from the NixOS community moderates the avenue. It is not an official location for NixOS discussions. And yes, individuals are now adding more FUD to the fire they lit. Again and again. Froggo's sad and hot.

Using @matrix at scale isn't fun. There are way too many matrix moment™ situations to count.

And now it was discovered that maybe there's a problem where banned users can still read rooms with their banned accounts?

Seriously, has anyone using ever been involved with moderation?

Abandoning the community because of the loud voices of a few individuals going against the wishes of the community is giving them all of it on a platter.

Fight.

Ask for change.

While energy intensive, it is not okay to let a few people's vile act of shitting on the front porch win. Come fetch the hose in the shed. We can hose it clean.

Got my old Xeon back online for the first time in a bit. The power supply got knocked out by a storm so I had to buy a new one. It's at this point I learned I have a four-year old version of PopOS on this thing

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@ernie what sort of old Xeon is it?

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@ernie neat, got one now re-used as a NAS (by shoving a 5×3.5" cage in the 3×5.25" bays). "Rocking" an E5-1660 (v1), and way too much RAM at 64GiB.

Though, configurations vary wildly, what's the CPU like on your setup?

I recommend reposting/boosting/whatever your local brand of it is. If you can and want to, that is.

I sure would want some time (and energy) to actually plan out a not-awful tool to deal with partitions (and maybe even filesystems as a treat)...

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@AdrianVovk maybe it'll help get the point across, but the overall pain points I've had in that area is not with real disks, but dealing with producing images, especially when needing obscure features. It would have to comprehensively expose all footguns, and in a way where the UX works well (and yes, as a library, CLI tool, TUI, even GUI, etc...)
