Matrix once again is not able to actually do the one thing it ought to do as an instant messenger, quickly and reliably transmit messages.

I know that this is a matrix.org failure this time and I really should move off that server, but on the other hand my motivation for self hosting that pile of misery is not increasing with each of these incidents. Doesn't help that the migration story is still pretty much non existent

@piegames like I hinted at in a thread of mine, the issue here is that it's federation between silos. This is not useful for the end-users. There is no way to "be yourself", your identity is still tighly coupled to a silo.

I personally think that it shouldn't count as federated when the identities are this tightly coupled to the silo'd operating machinery :/

Did someone hack me and put SMBIOS in my ARM?Though, to be more fair, SMBIOS is not a "BIOS" thing, nor a "PC thing".

When booting using UEFI, the SMBIOS data can be present. U-Boot can be configured (and imo it should be the default) to present information as SMBIOS tables.

My intention initially was to be a goofy jab at using the (perfectly fine) /proc/device-tree info.

Got my old Xeon back online for the first time in a bit. The power supply got knocked out by a storm so I had to buy a new one. It's at this point I learned I have a four-year old version of PopOS on this thing

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@ernie what sort of old Xeon is it?

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@ernie neat, got one now re-used as a NAS (by shoving a 5×3.5" cage in the 3×5.25" bays). "Rocking" an E5-1660 (v1), and way too much RAM at 64GiB.

Though, configurations vary wildly, what's the CPU like on your setup?

Slightly tempted to invest in a new mouse for my desk, to replace the £20 off-brand gaming mouse I've been using for... a long time

(How long? Well, you may remember the blog posts I wrote about hacking its firmware and unbricking it.. in 2018)

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@Ninji barely more than two years is good for off-brand mice.

@Ninji just thought I'd let you know that you are now bound by contractual law (I clicked the fav!) to leave the head on a table with a Welcome card in front of your couch for inspection.

I sure would want some time (and energy) to actually plan out a not-awful tool to deal with partitions (and maybe even filesystems as a treat)...

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@AdrianVovk making them, inspecting them, changing them, and more importantly: all the small mostly insignificant features implemented (for partitioning). And that, whether done imperatively, interactively, or scripted.

(as for filesystems, that's another thing, and another tool, and something larger for later... really...)

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@AdrianVovk not the udisks part. Really partitioning, and in a host system-agnostic manner.

I have had a look at many of the existing tools, even contributed to what is currently the best we have all around, but I think there's nothing out there that would help, compared to building from the ground up.

To be fair, I haven't had a look at repart, since it is purpose built to “Grow and add partitions to partition table”.

Anyways, I don't have a plan or anything, other than knowing that all current tools are incomplete, and sometimes wrong in really particularly specific ways. (But mostly good for most use cases!)

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@AdrianVovk maybe it'll help get the point across, but the overall pain points I've had in that area is not with real disks, but dealing with producing images, especially when needing obscure features. It would have to comprehensively expose all footguns, and in a way where the UX works well (and yes, as a library, CLI tool, TUI, even GUI, etc...)

ugh, using this old monitor is a challenge

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@Dee wait until you learn that some DVI to HDMI adapters don't pass EDID and such "additional" channels properly, which also prevents them from going to sleep... and identifying those misbehaving adapters is basically impossible.

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@jacqueline had the same realization when looking into rockbox for shenanigans (I didn't end-up doing).

It is a product of its time, couple that with years of development by accretion, and it feels like other than being already familiar and involved with rockbox, it is sadly not a good project to add new platforms to :(.

full disclaimer: I really really liked using rockbox on my ipod.

a x86 computer where it's usb-c port is used to reflash bios by connecting it to a computer and use fastboot flash boot boot.img

samueldr,
@samueldr@ap.samueldr.com avatar

@danct12 fun fact: the chuwi hi10 pro (and similar cherry trail reference design tablets) can run fastboot from the bios in two pretty cursed ways. Though none allow replacing its platform firmware (bios).

You can (1) boot any [specially crafted] UEFI program from the DNX Fastboot mode. And then (2) use the Intel fastboot program to uh... just fastboot stuff.

Some notes here:

So you could maybe do it in a contorted way by instead making the fastboot boot flasher.efi, which in turn would do the flashing!
