So, the reason I was looking at Star Wars - and other games - was because I'm questioning the whole point of "Character Advancement" in games that aren't power fantasies.

There are many games where you're just a "normal" person or "Normal+" 😉

Why do so many of those games have "advancement" or "levels" or whatever? Is it just because it's become expected? If you're not playing a Power Fantasy then why do characters just gaining power and capability at an impossible rate?

@masukomi we’ve just played Mörk Borg where “levelling up” often has a chance of leaving your character worse off 😀

I miss Maplins.

Maplins was a UK electrical store chain that sold consumer electronics, and was pretty much the only high street chain for any hobbiest

You could walk into a store with something, take it to back desk - say "what is this and how do I connect it to this and not blow myself up / start a fire" and they could tell you AND sell you the required kit - at a reasonable price!

Nowhere does this any more outside of Maker clubs/groups.

[current Maplins online is a zombie brand]

@Faintdreams the catalogues with the Chris Fosse sci fi covers were brilliant. I used to spend hours poring over them planning the projects I wanted to make!

I'm going to start writing all my posts on old English, and daring people to correct my grammar and spelling.

@RickiTarr I like to tell people that complain about someone saying ‘aksed’ instead of ‘asked’ if they still call a horse a ‘hros’ as it was originally in English.

Another night of waking every hour or so. I guess technically it’s my birthday now. Happy birthday me, I made to 50, who’d have thought. Once again I feel absolutely fine during the night, neither up nor down. The Goldilocks zone 😁

This is pretty much by the numbers post punk with agit prop lyrics about IRA prisoners, situationist politics and violence on TV. At one point he genuinely sings “Love’ll get you like a case of Anthrax and that’s something I don’t wanna catch”. The high point is probably the song about drugs (where he has a choice between Asprin and Paracetamol).

I think that this another case of mistaken identity. I assumed that Super Furry Animals were a novelty kids band, like the Wombles. However, they turn out to be a sort of Welsh psychedelic, shoe gazy, dubstep version of the Beach Boys with songs morphing from mellow piano introductions into glitchy electronica without pausing for breath. One track even features Paul McCartney chewing celery in the background. Enjoyably bonkers!

@derthomas would like to know the first song we heard live!

I hadn’t been to any gigs before moving to Sheffield for University, but I quickly made up for lost time. I dragged my housemates down to the Leadmill to see Cabaret Voltaire - I was blown away by the weird noises and use of slides and cine camera projections, but I don’t think they were impressed!

This is a video of the set that they played from the Hacienda on the same tour.

Hello, people!

This has as its theme. A song that opened a concert.

[EDIT] the theme is the first live song you remember. But I did hear live the track I shared, so I'll keep it.

One of the best openers I ever seen was from Moonspell in 2019, live in Milan. It was a great night, with great supporting bands too (e.g. Rotting Christ) and they opened with "Em Nome Do Medo", from their beautiful album "1755".
