Is this person crazy for porting Doom to AIX or am I crazy for watching it? Either way, a lovely romp through hell. https://youtu.be/XzhCGSE7KKw?feature=shared

Great overview of @pluralistic's current thoughts on what's wrong with the web and what we can do about it.

His list of solutions which include 1. competition, 2. labor, 3. interoperability, and 4. end user computing lays out a holistic path for the years ahead.

Happy to have been in the audience for this talk here in .

"Engineers Pinpoint Cause of Voyager 1 Issue, Are Working on Solution"

"The team suspects that a single chip responsible for storing part of the affected portion of the FDS memory isn’t working. Engineers can’t determine with certainty what caused the issue. Two possibilities are that the chip could have been hit by an energetic particle from space or that it simply may have worn out after 46 years."

On designing complex software with pen and paper:

'"Still designing," he'd say. He wanted the diagrams to look beautiful and symmetrical as well as capturing all the state information. I was getting nervous about the schedule, so I was glad when he finally began writing code. He wrote in pencil, at his desk, instead of using a terminal. He declined offers of typing help, and just kept writing away in pencil. He rewrote parts, copied things over, erased and rewrote. '

These are quite beautiful by Tiril Hasselknippe. Now on display in NYC.

"Hasselknippe’s balance of smoke-and-mirrors fantasy and deconstruction; her sophisticated convergence of obvious and obscure allusions in something as transient and elusive as ambience; the simple staging of an actually immersive work." https://4columns.org/fateman-johanna/tiril-hasselknippe

I have yet to come across a single instance where performers deviate (and often directly contradict!) the dynamics or phrasing written down by the composer and that deviation improved matters. Doesn’t matter who the performer is or the piece. (YT is great with sheet music video!) Somehow nobody would ever dare to deviate from the written notes, but phrasing and dynamics is disregarded all the time… consistently making it worse. Count me baffled.

@J12t do you feel that this is common with conductors as well?

Saw "Sugar Hill", a production of the Ellington/Strayhorn Nutcracker yesterday. Wow, was that awesome. I'd consider myself to be reasonably "up" on big-band jazz music, but had no idea Ellington and Strayhorn had tackled the Nutcracker until somewhat recently. It did not disappoint.

@dabeaz I was offered a ticket but couldn't make it to Chicago in time. What a bummer - I love Ellington!

The new concentration of power in private entities is astonishing.

The capital/employee ratio at OpenAI is unprecedented.

Even the USA Pentagon is being upstaged, e.g. "This concern led Musk to deactivate Starlink near Crimea last September to thwart Ukrainian communication." (via https://email.projectliberty.io/star-wars-the-technology-and-politics-of-satellite-internet?ecid=ACsprvtpo_0yfIwIVrDWT9I5ymjQY5H2WyFI4N1wTlTafbLlUARIrIQsZxAP5JFG7fcAhgNrtJAH)

These power arrangements are more profound than that held by historic corps like the Dutch East India Co. or families like the Bush dynasty.

Big golf boom after increased work from home. Not surprising because many who play golf actually don't work for a living, they just sat in an office and got paid while others worked.

  1. Working from Home (WFH) has powered a huge boom in golfing
  2. Golfers are playing more golf on weekdays, for example 143% more on Wednesday in 2022 vs 2019
  3. Golfers are playing more mid-afternoon, for example 278% more on Wednesday 4pm in 2022 vs 2019

I had my first Emacs coaching session with Prot today. It was even better than I could have imagined.

We focused mainly on the minibuffer:

Out:

  • icomplete
  • fido
  • which-key

In:

  • vertico
  • marginalia
  • orderless with customized matching rules for different completion categories.
