About to flip the switch to migrate this fosstodon account to my brand new personal instance at https://masto.machlis.com/@smach! 🤞 Hope to see you all there!

Alas, old posts don't migrate. But I've set up a searchable table of all my & other posts from both old & new instances at https://apps.machlis.com/shiny/smach_mastodon/

Looking forward to finding out more about and the on my own @mastohost instance. Such as whether all my followers here really di get transferred to the new acct 😅

Any suggestions on how to re-create my existing Mastodon lists on my new personal instance @smach , either using curl or the rtoot R package?
I was hoping to use the list migration tool at https://www.eliotlash.com/masto-list-importer/ but I get various errors (rate limit, cached user not found, odd HTML errors)
Thanks!

@smach @feditips I've tried

curl -X POST -H "Authorization: Bearer TOKEN_FROM_DEVELOPER_APP" https://masto.machlis.com/api/v1/lists/LISTID/accounts/?account_ids[]=ACCOUNT_ID

but I'm getting record not found. Not sure how to fix.

@CA7746 @smach oo thanks that looks encouraging. I've done my follows already will give it a try. Thank you!!!

Hello people. Today a contractor told me PowerBI can run Python scrips but not R scripts. Is that true? A quick google seems to suggest either R or Python would work.

smach,
@smach@fosstodon.org avatar

@sairfecht I’m pretty sure you could run R scripts in PowerBI back when I was writing about BI tools for Computerworld in 2013.

Hi @rstats! I am new to this group. What should I know to enjoy this space as much as possible? For example, in my toots, should I tag the group, the hashtag, or both? If one, when is it more appropriate to choose one over another?

smach,
@smach@fosstodon.org avatar

@rempsyc Welcome! I’m just a sample size of one, but I generally save tagging the group to posts that I think have pretty broad appeal. I use the hashtag for anything R-related at all. But others may have different strategies.

I'm going to experiment with running my own personal Mastodon instance! (just for me for now, admin & costs for others not part of project) I've signed up with @mastohost 🎉
Hopefully sometime in the next few days, I'll move my account. And if you follow me, you'll be automatically updated to follow at @smach

Someone asked why I continue to mask in airports and airplanes. They were convinced they must be safe from or the government would surely say or do something. Here's why:

The CDC samples international travelers in select US airports. Between 1 in 5 and 1 in 6 pools of swabs tested have been COVID+ for months. (In fact, most of the last year.) (I'd guess around 1 to 2 percent of travelers are positive, but that's just a guess )

https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#traveler-genomic-surveillance

smach,
@smach@fosstodon.org avatar

@augieray Each pool contains between 5 and 25 swabs, with an average of 11 swabs per pool. One positive swab means the whole pool is deemed positive. There is no way I’d get on a plane or sit in an airport unmasked right now - I mask in all public indoor spaces - but is not correct that 1 out of 6 people are Covid positive based on that data.

smach,
@smach@fosstodon.org avatar

@augieray I’m not sure if a pool is all just one flight, they don't specify. Maybe they random sample at customs where flights are co-mingled? Personally, I think the odds that someone is positive on a large jet are pretty high as long as there's still a pandemic, given the number of people in a plane and the likelihood that most have been in multiple indoor public places unmasked.

The {polars } 📦 “gives users access to a lightning fast Data Frame library written in Rust. [Its] parallel execution, cache efficient algorithms and expressive API makes it perfect for efficient data wrangling, data pipelines, snappy APIs and so much more. Polars also supports ‘streaming mode’ for out-of-memory operations. This allows users to analyze datasets many times larger than RAM.”

@jospueyo I haven’t tried it, but seems like it could be a good fit for people who already use it in another language, are used to its structure, and like some code consistency across languages. Some people like having the same libraries across languages. I❤️ R, but there are several different syntaxes to learning popular packages, and not everyone likes that. dplyr and data.table may both be , but they're quite different!

I'm really trying to make it work here, but less-than-ideal search and "Do I need a content warning on THIS post that's not about open-source software?" are making me think twice about still urging others to move here.

And yes I know I'm "new here" and there was a pre-existing culture. But I'd like to think after half a year of active engagement including hundreds of manually crafted posts, my opinion would matter too.

Abortions increased in Florida more than in California and New York post-Dobbs. Here’s why. - POLITICO

smach,
@smach@fosstodon.org avatar

@Emilyalpertreyes @NewsDesk They're counting total numbers by state without normalizing for population? So a 12,460 increase in Florida - population 22 million - is higher on the graph than a 12,400 increase in Illinois, pop 13 million?
Yes the FL vs NY and CA comparison is still justified, but the graph in that story is extremely misleading.

example of R code to send an email through OUTLOOK with an ATTACHMENT. has worked so far all day! the key for me has been keeping OUTLOOK open. NOTE: i am not using two slashes etc. Just the simple path that you can copy from the IDE. I am using R STUDIO: "Mountain Hydrangea" Release for windows

Benevolent dictators have no place in academic science.

I don't care if they usually make the right decision. Or if people don't think they've abused their power yet.

Science should not depend on one person being well-behaved.
Balance should be built in, power distributed.

@firefoxx66 Benevolent dictators should have no place running a social media platform either, which is what many of us object to about Twitter under its new ownership.

smach,
@smach@fosstodon.org avatar

@firefoxx66 Not sure what the others are, but this one is more that you craft your post on their site and select that you want it to go both on Twitter and Mastodon, not that it auto posts your Twitter feed here. It's used by paying corporate marketers to control a lot of feeds, I think it's fairly reliable unless the Twitter API fails. Good luck!

smach,
@smach@fosstodon.org avatar

@firefoxx66 it's a hard decision when you're sharing public service information and there's still an audience on Twitter. Seemed kind of an ironic thread for that platform these days, though 😀
