Of all the information a modern automotive dashboard provides, why is temperature even a thing? Also, while it may be A temperature, it is not THE temperature. The temperature inside a metal box in direct sunlight isn’t how it’s properly measured.

snaptophobic,
@snaptophobic@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@jmuscara Usually, the sensor is outside the cabin. On my car, it’s underneath so it can sense road surface temperatures and warn of ice conditions.

Can we just get this right, please?

  • If it’s covered in grass and dirt, or concrete and tarmac, and it’s outside, it’s the GROUND.
  • If it can have some kind of man-made covering, and is inside, it’s the FLOOR.
snaptophobic,
@snaptophobic@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@rasterweb Everyone! It’s particularly egregious in the context of a cricket match where a commentator talks about "hitting the floor" to catch or stop a ball when they’re playing in grass! If it was an indoor match, I’d accept it, but they’re outside under open sky.

@daycoder Ha! I wonder if this is where the error comes from?

As every building is technically built on the ground, there is potential for much confusion.

@daycoder This could be an excuse to explain Donald Trump's poor vocabulary. He has words. He has the greatest words.

Apart from all the usual things, why am I angry this morning? I don’t recall bad dreams or being particularly upset about anything yesterday.

Oh well, I shall be a bit of a grump today. Just ignore me.

Morning world. Definitely a Thursday sort of day.

Yesterday's was INFRANGIBLE, incapable of being broken. Well, that’s me out, then.

Morning world. I woke, thinking it’s Monday. Or was it Saturday? Perhaps it’s Wednesday. Either way, I’ve got to add some new words to my list.

Yesterday's was ARGOT, the jargon of a class or group.

I managed to call the hospital. Worked out okay, I have an appointment for next week. The maxillofacial people at the RVI always seem very friendly, they've helped me quite a lot through all this mess with my mouth.

@RolloTreadway I agree with Mia. You’re unsettled, and it needs something to let the stress dissipate. A walk will do that.

Morning world. I had a pretty good day yesterday. I’ll try for another today.

Yesterday's was COSMOGENY, an easy word for most of you classical scholars which describes the theory about the universe's origin.

I’ve now managed 48 hours of not going there.

Still occasional pangs, still an urge to just look. Getting there, though.

snaptophobic,

@Maker_of_Things Totally. There’s four or five accounts I miss. The rest was just noise.

Shop done. Our personal shop really needs to be fortnightly. Doing it every week doesn’t fit our consumption pattern. May have to revisit the schedule for helping our friend's food share shop.

This morning we shall be doing our grocery shop, plus helping our friend with his food share shop. Then, I think I’ll give myself the day to complete the painting on the model Wellington I was working on over the weekend. It’s very close to complete, and it would be nice to get it off the bench and make room for other things.

I’m resisting the bird site again. I had become a passive observer there rather than active participant. I get occasional pangs that I might be missing updates on the decent folk I followed. Resisting temptation to just see what they’ve been up to does mean I can avoid the doomscrolling. That helps the mental health.

Let’s see how I get on this week.

snaptophobic,
@snaptophobic@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Maker_of_Things I’ve done that, but the temptation to just see what else is going on is strong. I don’t need it.

Today I am painting a model Vickers Wellington. It's been primed, and I designed and cut paint masks for the markings with my Cameo Silhouette. The photos show the film mask as cut on the backing, and the model with some masks in place and paint being applied.

While it’s fiddly, I’ve come to prefer masking and painting markings on larger models instead of waterslide transfers. The latter can be variable in quality, often needing just as much prep as masking and spraying.

A model aeroplane sits on a stand, and on newspaper that’s been spread while painting is under way. The paper is filthy from aerosol paint overspray. The model has had cut film masks applied to cover a light grey area. White paint has been sprayed in areas where national markings of red-white-blue roundels will be painted.

@Jonhewlett Not at the moment. It got bunged up and wasn’t doing anything. As I’m spraying at low pressure it’s really only needed to extract vapour. I’ve got new filter screens on order, and normal service will be resumed.
