here's something i don't understand very well: what makes drills and screws different? why don't drills screw themselves in or screws drill a hole? usually, at least.

i guess the rather pointy tip of a screw makes sense. but the differences on the sides seem less obvious. i guess drills are more "cutty" and screws more "push-alongy" but it's hard to describe and put your finger on it.

little reminder: phone numbers are a terrible way to identify/authenticate people.

  • not everyone has a damn phone, and they suck anyway.
  • cellular networks are insecure. not just because of bad crypto (that might have improved for all i know), but because telcos can intercept/impersonate you and that's not even considered a design flaw.
  • they aren't even memorable. if you want to identify people with a random jumble of symbols, you might as well use a public key.

I'm dithering on finishing up some of the Van Fraassen exchanges so instead I'm torturing myself by finishing some of the last outstanding postmodernist stuff in the wide genre of fixation on "representation."

Christ, what an obviously fucking stupid conceptual bundling. Is creating a mathematical model to represent the electron field the same thing as electing a politician to represent you? According to these bozos it is! And anarchism is defined by rejecting both! Apparently.

I still don't know how to use mastodon, I feel like I'm only here to share my stuff and read replies, and less so any kind of discovery of following and engaging with other people's stuff

it seems like there's only a chronological feed of those you follow (which I usually don't like because it skews to the most active people), and a generic feed for your instance (pretty much useless), but no algorithmic discovery thing?

sofia,
@sofia@chaos.social avatar

@acegikmo

> I feel like I'm only here to share my stuff and read replies

that's a completely fine way to use it, of course. otherwise i second the hashtag thing. you can also hide people's boosts or only show certain languages when subscribing to people, which i find quite helpful.

thinking about why smartphones are still shit. like that for most of them you can't put your own OS on them. it seems it's still mostly because of proprietary drivers and to some extent locked bootloaders? did this get worse in the last 15 years?

on the hardware side there is stupid shit like non-rectangular displays, non-exchangeable batteries, etc, but if we could choose hardware independently of software that maybe wouldn't get so out of hand.

it's interesting to see how some anarcho-communists treat Elinor 's work on management. it seems for them, resricting access to ressources is suddenly obviously the right thing to do, and everything else is just a vicious strawman.

yet, restricting access to ressources unless you give/do something for it is this awful thing and completely unnecessary.

i wonder how they may justify this…

I finished 'the return of the god hypothesis' by stephen meyers yesterday. I heard him on brian keating's podcast (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvH14pAVl40) and found it interesting enough. Essentially, he argues that for various technical and philosophical reasons that the universe in general and life in particular is designed from the outside. He gets suprisingly technical, this is not "they found a beam of the true cross" type of apologia. He does put his finger on 'i fucking love science' type nonsense like Lawrence krauss's "Universe from Nothing" ("Nothing means different things to different people" - Krauss). Overall, I'm not persuaded, but he's not obviously wrong, and there are lots of things to check because he uses actual, technical arguments.

sofia,

@lain

> this is not "they found a beam of the true cross" type of apologia.

yeah, but it is creationism, doesn't seem that far off. i may watch the video, but i'm calling loads of special pleading for god, "X is impossible, also god can do X". i also suspect he provides no actual model of god, which is what you would need if you want to make predictions from it. otherwise you don't have an explanation, just an outcome-independent backstory.

sofia,
@sofia@chaos.social avatar

@lain i also don't know what your criticism on Laurence Krauss' argument is. he basically just points out that the the beginning of the universe seems to have needed no energy to happen. i don't know how to do the math, but i from what i heard physicists tend to agree.

it's only tangentially related to god claims, of course. it's just that theist tend to believe that "creation" was a big effort, and if the universe can easily just happen, it's not clear what role god played in it.

sofia,
@sofia@chaos.social avatar

@lain "Nothing means different things to different people", well, yes, obviously. he just talks about a zero energy state, but he constantly got confronted with concepts like "an absence of physics", which seems a pretty misguided idea. to the best of our knowledge, physics is pretty damn universal and doesn't just go missing sometimes.

if people want to put forward some concept of "physicslessness", maybe they should first explain how that would be a possibility…

sofia,
@sofia@chaos.social avatar

@lain i watched the video now. and i think for the most part it's just that special pleading i mentioned.

one thing else that seems worth commenting on is that "christians invented science" claim. i want to write a more in-depth post on this, but looking at ancient philosophy (check out the presocratics), it's pretty clear that people were long looking for universal principles before the idea of some god-given "law of nature".
