I've said it before but I'll say it again.
It's not that everyone I know who had #Covid has developed terrible new medical issues.
It's that everyone I know who has developed terrible new medical issues recently had Covid.
And in every case I'm thinking of, it's become a health crisis within about three months of their most Covid bout. (Usually not a bad bout, either.)

Just lost a friend who had covid last October, was diagnosed with MDS in November, which progressed to Leukemia in April.

I don't know there's a connection, but the timing seems...concerning.

"Just use Linux" is much like "just ride a bike" or "just shop at a refill store" - accessing the non default option can be time consuming, expensive or unavailable locally. Y'all want to hear a fact that really changed the way I thought about homelessness?

Half of all homeless people were in the foster system at some point. Social Workers often call the foster system The Highway to Homelessness. If you ever had a point in your life where you had to live with friends or family to for a short time to get back on your feet, remember that is a privilege that not everyone had.

cavyherd,
@cavyherd@wandering.shop avatar

@RickiTarr

People really have no concept of how involved "functioning in society" is, which is one (of many) reasons why the cult of the "individual" is so pernicious. Most of "privilege" boils down to social connection: navigating schools, jobs (& the job applications), personal finance (which is heavily dependent on having one to learn effective financial skills & thinking from), interpersonal relationships that then provide resources to fall back on in crisis....

& on & on & on. >

cavyherd,
@cavyherd@wandering.shop avatar

@RickiTarr

It seems like the foster system assumes kids will just pick this stuff up "naturally." They don't put half the effort into preparing kids for the adult world that wildlife rehab workers invest in, say, raising up condors for reintroduction into the wild.

(Of course, that effort presumes awareness of the level of instruction needed, & the impression I get is that foster systems typically struggle just to keep kids fed & housed.)

The reason why we would love to see more accounts talk about composting on the is simple.

You will be able to focus on your area and explain to local people what they can compost and where they can get their organic matter.

You can create a local community that will help your local area make a better place.

If we started this account it is for a main reason. Make people understand that by choosing to compost they can have a positive impact and do something about the .

So creating a multitude of local accounts that will allow people to organize and make their area a better place is a very powerful thing to do for the .

Huge Coronal Mass Ejections, the largest in decades, directed towards Earth took place yesterday and will result in a severe Geomagnetic Storm arriving tonight and tomorrow morning. There is potential for disruption of communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations.

MERS Outbreak in Saudi Arabia puts health experts on high alert

The pathogen, known as Middle East respiratory syndrome, is a close relative of SARS-CoV-2 but has a far higher fatality rate – 35 per cent of confirmed cases have died, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO expects that less serious and asymptomatic cases have historically been missed, which could also affect the overall case fatality rate.

Again for people (racists), complaining about falling birth rates:

The birth rate for women over 40 is not falling. The birth rate for women over 30 is not falling.

What's happening, is girls 15 to 17 are having fewer babies. Kids are having fewer kids.

Also, this is an interesting way of saying that "Teen pregnancy is down, due to sex education and contraception."

In 1991 25% of 15 year olds gave birth before they turned 21. That's bad. Now it's 6%. That's better.

Junk health insurance plans are a bad deal, often leaving people with thousands in medical debt. Junk health care plans mislead consumers and don’t offer real coverage.

The new rule announced by the Biden administration is an important move to crack down on junk health insurance, protect patients, and ensure access to quality health coverage.

Don't have time to read closely so not sure if this angle is covered, but what's pinching me right now is dental insurance. My dentist of 15 years has left the network my work provides, which means I can stick with them & pay $134 for a check-up & cleaning?? (Which is supposed to covered 100%??) out of pocket—or change dentists.

I'm getting too old for this shit.

Edit: I don't even want to think about the next time they want to give me a crown—that's already $650

cavyherd,

@Barbramon1 @TonyStark

::snort:: No. This practice now makes me pay up front, then the insurance sends a check for the portion (about half) that they'll cover.

Yeah, I didn't figure the initiative would cover dental. We seem to have the idea in this society that having healthy teeth is somehow a luxury.

compost, to climate
@compost@regenerate.social avatar

Starting to read articles about farmers warning that for the first time, since WWII, we could have a year with no harvest in a lot of crops.

I have seen many documentaries warning us that because of the topsoil being washed away we will see events like this happening.

The consequences of the #ClimateChange are that it becomes more difficult to provide a crop with safe conditions to grow.

My point is mastering compost at home and learning to grow your food is a very valuable skill.

cavyherd,
@cavyherd@wandering.shop avatar

@compost

Home composting (& home growing) are both useful & important supplements, but for city dwellers especially, that's never going to be more than a supplement.

What curdles my milk is that we had a viable municiple composting system running for...I dunno, then, fifteen years that I know about? >

cavyherd,
@cavyherd@wandering.shop avatar

@compost

But people got so lazy about sorting their waste (in an area renowned for its env activism & innovation, ffs) that the composting just flat banned anything but food scraps and plant cuttings. Meaning all that work to train people to frex buy compostible disposable plates & whatnot—poof—wasted.

Worse, any loads that come in with more than a certain very low level of contamination get rerouted to the landfill. >

cavyherd,
@cavyherd@wandering.shop avatar

@compost

Which I'm sadly confident is a VERY high percentage.

Which is additionally depressing/infuriating, because this would to some not-small way to addressing the topsoil problems. (Obviously there are other major factors in play, but still.)

The problem really needs to be addressed on the production side. >

cavyherd,
@cavyherd@wandering.shop avatar

@compost

(Ask me about my idea for a product underwriting system and associated regulation that results in all products having "Nutrition Facts" equivalent labels laying out the carbon footprint of the product (including packaging & transport)'s production chain, whether its inputs are extracted, recycled, or upcycled, and where the matter of which it is comprised winds up at the end of its service life.)

Why, yes, I DO have opions about this.

cavyherd,
@cavyherd@wandering.shop avatar

@compost

This is a realm in which locality can have a mitigating effect, however. When the new restrictions came into effect, I was suddenly faced with the prospect of landfilling a third of the stuff that comes out of the guinea pig's cages (leaving aside the absolute pointlessness of using our condo complex's curbside because people apparently can't see the difference between the words "Compostables", "Recycling," & "Trash"). >

cavyherd,
@cavyherd@wandering.shop avatar

@compost

(Who me, angry & bitter why do you ask?). I did some desperate internet searching, and for a miracle, found the outfit Sharewaste.com, which aims to hook people who have "waste" they need to offload with people who can actually use that waste. (I'm not sure if they act only in the compost realm; I haven't thought to check.) >
