thinking about designing my own again. don't expect something to come from it, but seeing other computer projects inspires me.

one thing that excites me most is the idea of having a self-organizing mesh network for connecting components. that doesn't seem like that extreme of an overhead computationally, but i wonder how far you can push it.

it seems like every peripheral protocol has some sort of controller, so i guess i'd just have a little router in each and call it a node.

sofia,
@sofia@chaos.social avatar

having separate nodes for CPU(s) and RAM seems hard to imagine so i won't. but having multiple semi-independent compute-nodes would be pretty cool.

i think their controller would need to feed them their boot code to get started, which would probably come from a storage node marked as bootable.

maybe you can have multiple boot channels, set on the storage and compute node by dip switches, so you can run more than one OSs in the system 🤔.

thinking about it, i constantly come to questions of "authority" or "priority" and it feels strange.

it seems computers just assume something to be a "primary" input and output and "trust" it.

obviously, there is no reason to assume that machines and societies should be alike. maybe more like polar opposites.

but also so many flaws of the internet (DNS, etc) seem to derive from assuming it's fine to just have an authority for everyone.

@sofia@chaos.social avatar

another design consideration would be minimizing the need for drivers. i feel like most devices are can be sorted in a handful of categories:

  • storage (file systems?)
  • stream of pixels (continous (cam, display) or on demand (scanner, printer))
  • audio-like stream
  • relative and absolute vectors (mouse, sticks, dials, pens, touch)
  • bits (buttons, lights)
  • network
  • other computer (GPU or whatever)
    i think their node just should manage the devices and expose them at those levels.

@sofia@chaos.social avatar

on modern operating systems, hardware is buried under opaque layers of bullshit and not exposed to the user at all. if you're lucky you have a driver and they are opaquely exposed to programs and "work".

i would like a sort of virtual switchboard where i can just route IO however i like. programs can just expose their IO as virtual nodes, and other programs can be put in between for any sort of translation/processing.

finally some good beef cofe

sofia,
@sofia@chaos.social avatar

@lain okay, so obviously: what?

but also, it's probably not but "biooengineered beef protein isolate" sounds a bit like it could be cultured meat or something.

vegan carnivore diet, when?

Adorable Long Beach FNB interview that's very 1995. https://archive.org/details/interview-with-camille-from-long-beach-food-not-bombs

sofia,

@rechelon wow, i didn't know Food Not Bombs was that old, i heard of it in the 0Xs and i thought the name referred to the iraq war 😅.

i wasn't even vegetarian back then (but also i was 7 or 8 👶, and i must have been around 9 when i started vegetarianism). feels pretty ahead of the time, i certainly haven't heard people talk about the meat industry destroying the environment back then…

so, there is this this space filling curve called a Gosper curve, which got some neat property like forming a fractal island that can tile the plane.

however, the best part of it is that it's also called a flowsnake 😃.

@evan ah, i missed it, but i made a similar poll about a week ago 😅:

imagine you have a chessboard and on the first you place one grain of rice on the first tile, and then you place twice as many grains on the next tile than on the previous.

you may think this is easy to imagine, but even on the second tile there is already more than twice as much rice than has ever been grown on the entire sun 🤯.

sofia,
@sofia@chaos.social avatar

sofia,
@sofia@chaos.social avatar

@ordnung alles klar :)

sofia,
@sofia@chaos.social avatar

sofia,
@sofia@chaos.social avatar

"Update on reload" (was glaube ich soviel wie neustart on reload heist?) funktioniert hingegen nicht…
