Hey @standupmaths, regarding the Rubik's Cube problem on episode 072, why is not possible to fall into a loop that doesn't go back to the initial state, like A -> B -> C -> D -> B -> C ->.D ->B ... ? Is there only one way to go to state B ? Love the show ! (and, are there 450 dice in the jar ?)

@frenchguych because all moves are uniquely reversible (at least, that is how I think about it) for a given move only a single state A can lead to B. PS No comment.

But I was just listening to episode 071 of a problem squared. Is your card / present size / multiplication not just possible using logs? log(a) + log(b) = log(ab)?

Or is the point you’re finding more convenient values that also work.

Or do I just have to wait for Christmas, haha.

My son tried to solve a Rubik’s cube at the childminder, showing off since he does it routinely at home, but he got stuck. This is a plea for help!

We learned from the Think Maths instructions. At step 4 where the bottom ought to be a cross, dot, line or V, he says it did this - both line and V without being a cross. Then doing either the L move or the V move didn’t find a cross. I don’t know how to replicate the problem, so set up the yellow layer starting in this position (but without the first two layers solved). Playing around, we found we appeared to be stuck in a loop - depending on orientation we could sometimes rotate the line 90 or swap to a dot and back. I wasn’t able to inspect the childminder’s cube but he says the rest of the cube was two complete layers as it should be. Is this a situation that arises? What do you do if it does?

@peterrowlett It means the cube is broken. Either someone moved stickesnaround or it broke and a piece was put back in with the wrong orientation. Often rotating a corner (takes a bit of force) can fix it but it’s trial and error.

Sometimes a precisely defined mathematical concept can be in complete opposition to its colloquial meaning. I encountered this recently with the concept of two objects being incomparable. Mathematically, this means that neither object is greater than or equal to the other (with respect to some ambient partial ordering); however colloquially it is often taken to mean that one object is far greater than the other, which is almost the opposite meaning.

Another example I know of: if something is colloquially said to be "generally true" (i.e., true with only a few exceptions), then mathematically it will not be true in general (since "true in general" indicates that there are no exceptions whatsoever).

Are there other examples where the mathematical usage of a term is not merely different or orthogonal to the colloquiual usage, but is actually closer to being an antonym of that usage?

@tao I find it funny that “countless” tends to be used by the public for discrete things which very much can be counted, there are just a lot to count.

Lay use of “periodically” means the opposite of being regular and is closer to meaning sporadic.

And I’d claim on a technicality that when people say “sphere” they mean all of the interval volume which is the ‘opposite’ to just the surface.
