i know i'm showing my age but every time i see "AI features added!" i mentally interpret it as "Bonzi Buddy 2.0™"

here's the iTerm "Pls No AI" gitlab issue https://gitlab.com/gnachman/iterm2/-/issues/11475 so i guess it's not a popular move

not to call ai a big woop of nothing but slack absolutely slaughtering any remaining trust they have in order to provide "emoji suggestions" is incredible

today i've been learning how automatic transmissions work

i know how manual ones work, physically changing which gears are interacting, with or without synchromesh

but i didn't realise that automatic ones work on a different principle, using planetary gear boxes and applying a clutch to the ring gear to change the output ratio

that, and planetary gearboxes with clutches to change gears go back as far as the model t

made "named arguments" work on the rpc toy, which is fun because go does not have named arguments, and you also can't use reflect to get the names of arguments

which is neat

thinking about how my industry is piloted by nepobabies and failsons, and the leaders who don't spend 80% of their time sabotaging the product are hailed as visionaries

and well, i'm also thinking about how armies were stuffed with inbred nobility, people who believed they were born to rule, and how they kept getting defeated by military geniuses

have seen a new startup advertising "ci, but without yaml!" and "if it runs on your machine, it passes in the cloud!"

and like i know i'm old but "writing a shell script" and "not needing root to run a test suite" feel like problems that can be solved without writing integration code for a cloud based test SDK

i do feel that if more static type weenies had an appreciation for dynamic languages, they wouldn't shoot themselves in the foot every time they have to write a build system

yesterday i said that building a whole app in rust reminded me of "let's build the entire plane out of the black box"

and like, i know my poetic license is still being renewed but at least one person decided to interpret it as literally as possible

rather than "aiming to build large pieces software in the most expensive way possible is not the most efficient use of engineering"

this is going to rustle a few people's jimmies but it is a very earnest, very thoughtful post about the conflicting goals of rust and gamedev

https://loglog.games/blog/leaving-rust-gamedev/

it really echos a lot of the problems i've faced with static languages

seeing someone post about developers "chasing trends" instead of working on "hard problems" and i dunno—are you sure those two things are different?

when normal people say "hard problems" they mean "world peace" "poverty" and when developers say "hard problems" they mean things like "solving a puzzle"

anyway it's funny to see someone who works at "the world’s leading AI-powered developer platform" call other people out for chasing novelty

i've been asking myself what it means to add relative paths to a filesystem protocol, and wether we could do something similar in http
