does rotating high-reward categories for their cashback system, and traditionally they have had gas stations as one of the categories. It looks like this year they are replacing that with gas stations, electric vehicle charging stations, and public transit. Now I need to figure out how to set up a second payment method with my autoloading public transit card...

@NBAnthony2k My other credit card gives 2% cash back on everything, so the Discover reward is basically 3% which means spending more than I need immediately is worse than just keeping the money in my savings account with how high interest rates are right now.

My company has some sort of global Microsoft chatroom that nobody uses except for the occasional person asking what the room is for and a flurry of people reply-alling to shut up. I have no idea why they have this thing but it sure is chaotic.

@ai6yr A building next to mine had a pile of tumbleweeds 10 feet high and the entire length of the wall. Every single truck/SUV had tumbleweeds caught underneath it, and any truck with a snowplow attachment now looked like it had been plowing thorns. Going outside without being armored in a car meant risking being hit in the face with a thorn bush.

Millimeters of mercury is one of the most ridiculous units. It's not SI or US customary, and it's the same order of magnitude as a hectopascal. Just use hectopascals instead please.

Not only are we getting a brewpub a mile up a shared-use path, we're getting a nice pizza and craft beer place a half mile down a shared-use path in the other direction. I'm very excited about this because there's not much here besides fast food and national chains.

I really hate daylight savings time changes. They're such a stupid waste of so much time by so many people for such little gains of questionable worth and so many negative secondary effects. Can we please choose one way or the other? I have a preference but I'd throw that out if we can agree to stop this weird painful 20th century practice.

@Neblib I think it'd be funny if we ended up with a bunch of 2 hour gaps between neighboring areas. Imagine Georgia going with UTC-4 (their current daylight time) and Alabama going with UTC-6 (their current standard time). That would mess with places like Columbus/Phenix City so much and be hilarious (for outsiders).

@Neblib Also it's funny seeing the interstate coalitions springing up. Like it got added to the Oregon bill to only make the change if California and Washington join in, Nevada isn't a factor. And they neglected eastern Oregon, which really they should tie to whatever Boise does but they aren't doing that. So if Boise decides to stay on UTC-6 and WA and CA go with UTC-8, then eastern Oregon would be flipping between UTC-6 and UTC-7 for no reason (until another law passes).

@stefan I had a teacher in elementary school who insisted she was 16. I didn't get the chance to celebrate her birthday with her, but she did retire soon after my year!

I think that the NFC payment protocol includes language information, which is weird but neat. I have my phone set to a language I don't speak for funsies, and, after I paid with it at the store today, the payment terminal switched to that language for the rest of the transaction. It'd certainly be handy for travelers. When I went to Europe a few months ago, I was wishing it was easier to put POSes in English.

One of the goons running for US Senate here has a big billboard up in a prominent location that's just a picture of his face and the words "secure our border" in a menacing typography. 10 years ago that would have garnered a negative reaction all-around with pundits and politicians saying it was contrary to the local spirit of hospitality and pro-immigration, but I guess it's normal now.

My phone's charging port died after only a few dozen uses and my brother's phone's charging port died quickly too, and I'm blaming USB-C because that's the main new thing about them.

@fivey iD is quite nice! I think it got its bad rep before it had multiselection (also for its questionable preset choices). Now that it has multiselection it's certainly my main editor.

There's a law working its way through the legislature of #Utah that's calling for a study of how to track the purchases people make with cash. It's wanted because apparently the government already tracks purchases with cards and they want to expand their surveillance powers.
