At some point recently, iOS speech to text started adding a ton of commas to everything, which is driving me a little batty. I will say “comma” if I want one! Stop adding them unprompted!

tomlowenthal,

@leigh It's deeply frustrating. It can't keep up with talking at full-speed, but slowing down makes it add commas everywhere.

seldo, to random

There's gender-neutral restrooms and then there's just being kind of twee and annoying.

tomlowenthal,

@seldo I really don’t like that sort of signage. It really feels like it’s telling me that I’m as real and legitimate as a fairy or a robot. That’s dehumanizing and insulting.

What is everybody using as their link organizing app? Asking because I use Evernote basically for creating archives of links for research that I'm doing. And now Evernote is going away ...

    tomlowenthal,

@annaleen I really enjoy Readwise Reader for things I read or have a computer read aloud to me (posts, PDFs…). I use Abyss from @xmollv for every other sort of link, which it’s happy to save offline, tag, and search to my heart’s contentment. But there are some really interesting other replies in this thread, and I’m definitely going to give them a look too!

I'm forever grateful for the guy that scammed me out of $11 one time I was drunk in college.

Without that I wouldn't understand the subjective experience of having my thoughts manipulated in that way. I think it's the one thing that's actually made me less vulnerable to scams since.

    tomlowenthal,

@recursive Sounds like it was well worth eleven dollars. Almost like a live virus vaccination which makes you feel under the weather for a day so that you are less vulnerable to far more serious illness.

Look playing RPGs isn't just an escapist power fantasy. The fantasy is about having clear and well-defined problems which can be addressed through straightforward if challenging tasks. It's reassuring to imagine that there are some big problems which can be solved by a small group of dedicated individuals. And then there's the ultimate fantasy: forget casting magical spells; RPG characters get to sleep eight hours in a night and wake up feeling refreshed.

I want the iOS App Store guidelines to require every app with a built-in browser to have an option to disable it. When I open links in Instagram or TikTok or Twitter (RIP), I never ever ever want them framed in that app’s browser. Just let me open links in the system browser! Without extra taps!

I also hate when apps make you jump through hoops to reach the system share sheet. Your app is not my whole world! We really are in the consolidation and enshitification of online services.

    tomlowenthal,

Don’t get me heckin’ started on places which make their websites a nightmare to use or make the interface suck when you’re not logged in. No, Reddit, I don’t want to use your app. I’m here in a browser on purpose; you don’t have to ask me every page-load. Freaking set a cookie and stop bothering me. If I were going to use an app, it would be Apollo, but apparently you can’t stand how much better their app is than yours and are trying to kill them now?

    Enshitification sucks so badly. Ugh.

i can sum up everything wrong with speculative fiction with one fact: there are literally hundreds of stories about nazis winning WWII, but only one video game series about a dolphin who travels through time to fight aliens

    tomlowenthal,

@est And the soundtrack is just full of bangers. Not a single dud track.

Last time fascists seized control of a major world power, before the second world war, it took a massive alliance of the economic and military capacity of the rest of the world to defeat them.

This time, the country where fascism is rising already controls a majority of the world’s military and military-industrial capacity. Could the rest of the world — even if somehow united against a common adversary — ever hope to hold back the power of a fascist USA?

    tomlowenthal,

@glyph There are plenty of concerns to go around.

    tomlowenthal, to random

The archetypal fantasy quest consists primarily of the mundane activities of walking and camping, interspersed occasionally with moments of drama and crisis. This narrative structure creates a sense of time and place which situates such tales within a wider cultural and geographic context. The rise of the automobile subverts this dynamic of patience, replacing the step by step hike with the placeless and alienated road trip located primarily within the constructed vehicle. In this essay, I will…

    tomlowenthal, to random

I keep telling myself that I have enough privilege to weather the rise of fascism, best the Nazis, and make it out the other side. But my subconscious clearly doesn’t agree. As I move around my home, my brain keeps asking “Will this be one of the things you take with you when you flee?”. And I know that this is the easiest possible version of this problem to have. But my brain is descended from all the generations of my ancestors who saw things coming and got out early. It knows what this is.
