Small city journalist. I'm switching careers after getting a degree in Computer Science.

I live in the deep red wilds of West Texas, where I grew up. I moved back in 2018 from Sunset Park, Brooklyn, so I could afford to go to school.

Half Spaniard, half US American with the most English-sounding name on Earth.

After reading this essay by @baldur, I bought all of his books. It's a loin-girding romp through all of my worst fears as a fresh CS grad aiming for a career in web dev.

Truly an amazing read.

We've been watching this Syfy show Resident Alien and most of the music on it in season 1 has been total garbage. Just the most awful shit. But then they pull out both Bowie and the Breeders in ONE later season 1 episode, and man, now I wanna listen to the Breeders. 🤣

@trainingmontage@hachyderm.io avatar

@jake4480 They're so fun to listen to every once in awhile!

@jake4480 I loved that album. I remember trading a high school girlfriend a Smashing Pumpkins CD for it.

So, my mom moved back to Spain a little over a year ago and I need to go visit.

I'm thinking I should consider going by boat given the state of the airline industry. How the hell do you ensure you're not flying on a Boeing?

@LeftistLawyer WTAF, I was just listening to Ryan Adams before I jumped on Mastodon.

trainingmontage,
@trainingmontage@hachyderm.io avatar

@LeftistLawyer I hadn't listened to him in at least twenty years. It was like jumping in a time machine to when I was a very sad, serious young man in NYC.

trainingmontage,
@trainingmontage@hachyderm.io avatar

@LeftistLawyer Yeah, getting older is actually pretty great. And if it's not great, it's the best-case scenario.

Learning golang has been really nice. I especially like the std library. It makes me wish JavaScript had the same thing.

Here's an example. Want your session to last 24 hours?

mySessionLifetime = 24 * time.Hour

There's a lot more about the language I really like, especially the bare-bones simplicity. It's like the whole language was made so everyone's code looks like Angus Croll's Hemingway example.

@anderseknert I'm still in the shallow end, so I'm not yet familiar with the annoying parts. I'm sure I'll get there, though!

trainingmontage,
@trainingmontage@hachyderm.io avatar

@anderseknert I've mostly been slinging HTML responses so far, so I haven't even had to mess with JSON much.

trainingmontage,
@trainingmontage@hachyderm.io avatar

@anderseknert Oh, God. Haha. Very excited to get to that 10%.

Reflecting once again on how bad the incentives in my industry. In the software industry.

Our need for an income (usually derived from surveillance advertising), given our current society, drives us (and our computers) do a lot of extra work! Which don't benefit you, or is actively harmful to your attention.

I can't imagine computing getting better until we have, say, a UBI. Until we have a more just economy.

trainingmontage,
@trainingmontage@hachyderm.io avatar

@alcinnz The underlying threat of losing the ability to survive corrupts so many endeavors. It's sad to think about everything people could achieve if they were free from that pressure.

Made my first contribution to OSS last night. It was a small change that addressed a piece of functionality I wanted, and it only took about an hour.

It felt good! Definitely going to do more of that.

@kellogh Mecause it sounds like "maggots?"

I'm looking for awesome blogs with RSS feeds. I want to keep a solid selection of sites devoted to development (especially web development and the web platform), but feel free to let me know about any interesting sites you follow. I'm open to just about all suggestions.

I'll also use your suggestions to test out the functionality of the little RSS reader I'm working on.

trainingmontage,
@trainingmontage@hachyderm.io avatar

@amxmln Hey, thanks! Looks like my very basic RSS link discovery couldn't find a feed by just adding your site's URL directly.

Do you have an rss/atom link in the head of your site?

trainingmontage,
@trainingmontage@hachyderm.io avatar

@amxmln Hm, it should match /rss.xml if it's at the top-level of the site, so it should be finding yours. Looks like I have some work to do!

trainingmontage,
@trainingmontage@hachyderm.io avatar

@amxmln I figured it out. Part of my heuristic was checking the content-type header and I didn't have text/xml as one of the accepted types. It works fine now.

I should probably take the weekend and redo my site so I can start posting blogs about developing this reader. It could be helpful for anyone who sets out to do the same thing in the future.

@jake4480 Amazing, thank you so much!

February 1, 2024- “According to the study, 34% of adults in Oklahoma are suffering from long Covid.” - https://kfor.com/news/local/study-finds-oklahoma-leads-the-nation-in-long-covid/

trainingmontage,
@trainingmontage@hachyderm.io avatar

@Brad Gotta be careful how you word things. The article says 34 percent of those who were infected with COVID. Saying "34% of adults in Oklahoma..." makes it seem like more than a third of the state's adult population has long COVID.

Of course, I don't doubt that it won't be long before a third of the state does have long COVID.

does anyone have data on the correlation of crypto/ai types and the absence of an inner monologue

trainingmontage,
@trainingmontage@hachyderm.io avatar

@exchgr Oh no. Does the absence of an inner monologue correlate with something I don't know about yet?

trainingmontage,
@trainingmontage@hachyderm.io avatar

@exchgr I don't have one, so I was worried there might have been some awful discovery that would make me want to keep that under wraps.

trainingmontage,
@trainingmontage@hachyderm.io avatar

@exchgr lol. I was like "Oh, dear lord people who think like me are usually psychopaths. How am I going to spin this?"
