Small city journalist. I'm switching careers after getting a degree in Computer Science.

I live in the deep red wilds of West Texas, where I grew up. I moved back in 2018 from Sunset Park, Brooklyn, so I could afford to go to school.

Half Spaniard, half US American with the most English-sounding name on Earth.

My intention was to study for Friday's final exam.

Instead I watched until midnight.

Probably the better choice, really.

I'm looking for awesome blogs with RSS feeds. I want to keep a solid selection of sites devoted to development (especially web development and the web platform), but feel free to let me know about any interesting sites you follow. I'm open to just about all suggestions.

I'll also use your suggestions to test out the functionality of the little RSS reader I'm working on.

Over here fantasizing about creating a continent-spanning network of solar powered New Packet Radio internet relays.

It would be nice to have a lo-fi Information network for when the sharks finish off the internet cables.

A few years back, I decided to explore a personally romanticized part of my heritage by reading about the Spanish Civil War. I was born outside of Madrid, and my mom's a Spaniard. I was looking for some connection to my grandparents, who I never met, and I had a lot of dumb ideas about some natural tendency toward antifascism in Spain (never mind that antifascism requires the presence of fascism in the first place).

Instead, I got a lesson in how these authoritarian takeovers happen. /1

You know you're in for a hell of a summer when a 108-degree high is a relief.

We hit 114 degrees early this week. This is West Texas, and we expect hot summers.

We don't generally expect them to be around 10 degrees hotter than Phoenix.

Learning golang has been really nice. I especially like the std library. It makes me wish JavaScript had the same thing.

Here's an example. Want your session to last 24 hours?

mySessionLifetime = 24 * time.Hour

There's a lot more about the language I really like, especially the bare-bones simplicity. It's like the whole language was made so everyone's code looks like Angus Croll's Hemingway example.

Wait. Why are web devs signing up for another closed platform () when they could use an open standard like ?

Seems like a weird choice to me, especially considering their whole discipline is based on understanding and using open standards.

I've become more lactose intolerant as I've gotten older.

My fiancée, who loves to cook, especially desserts, makes cream-based desserts almost exclusively.

This is a white chocolate mousse with raspberry sauce (which she told me to let everyone know she strained because she remembered that I don't like raspberry seeds).

It's delicious.

folks, I could use some help solving a problem:

I have an app that will let users upload csv files with varying schemas and filenames. I want to be able to map a given csv to an existing model without knowing exactly which model it will be beforehand.

In an early iteration I defined a "lookup table" dict that I checked, then dynamically imported the proper model to instantiate. It works, but I feel like there's probably a better way to do it.

Any ideas?

I feel like reading some but I want a specific kind. I don't know if there's a name for the subgenre that's essentially short-term, then long-term extrapolation about our future given our current technological and social state.

I'm thinking along the lines of Accelerando by @cstross, or Earth/Existence by David Brin.

Anyone have any ?

I'm gonna goof the hell off this weekend.

Okay, I need some recommendations from people who are still taking precautions or anyone with experience in the or community.

Starting next week, I'm doing a research project with a professor who's /hard of hearing. I don't know , so I need a good clear .

I would just ask him to mask, but I know the virus can hang around for hours.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

In times like these, I think to myself, "What would the French do?"

I'm not even going to share an image of what I think they'd do but you know Paris would be hot as hell right now.

Every time I talk about I get excited about how cool it is that it's part of the web platform. Then I start thinking about how amazing the internet is.

Inevitably, I start thinking about how it started because a computer scientist at CERN thought "It would be great if we could link documents to each other and address them so they're accessible from any computer connected to the network... It should also be open source."

Incredible.

I have never had a more disappointing experience than the software engineering class I'm finishing right now.

I don't know whether it was me, but I just couldn't get my teammates to work on the project. If I hadn't slaved for the whole semester, our presentation to NASA (fucking NASA), we would have been completely embarrassed.

Is that just not a thing?

I'm still really enjoying it but it's a little weird.

So, my mom moved back to Spain a little over a year ago and I need to go visit.

I'm thinking I should consider going by boat given the state of the airline industry. How the hell do you ensure you're not flying on a Boeing?
