Tomorrow I have to interview a job applicant about their React experience, and I'm looking at interview question guides.

They're bullshit, it's all absolutely bullshit. Most of it is just testing if someone knows the term for a particular pattern.

Looking for jobs right now is fucking wild, because all the tech jobs are hiring at the same salary as they were 13 years ago when I started working in software. This was back when the boring ass Oregon state jobs paid so little by comparison.

But Oregon state has tied their salaries to inflation and living wages and given cost of living adjustments (COLAs). So now, the boring ass state jobs pay more than the private company jobs.

The software industry laughs at COLAs, but we've been taking pay cuts every single year. If I'd just have stayed at DEQ working as a hydrologist, I'd be making considerable more than a senior software developer. That's wild.

@DivineKestrel I think occasionally about how studies keep finding that you need to be earning 200k+ to live comfortably in SoCal. I have only barely achieved that last year at the literal top of my career (Principal Software Engineer w/ 25 years experience) with all the privileges I have. Now the only option I have to make more is to move to an even larger company (which I’d hate), or become a manager (which I’d suck at)

Is Kagi (the search site*) worth it? 300 searches doesn’t seem like much when I frequently go through a dozen different keyword combinations to try to find obscure coding problems. Does their search actually work?

I specifically wrote a section about this in the GDB because so many transfems get slammed with internalized guilt and self doubt over it. This exact phenomenon reinforced so much transmisogyny in myself, growing up. It’s why AGP is so nefarious, because it digs under our skin and goes right after one of our greatest insecurities.
