    I've attempted to tackle this project a couple times, but this is the first time I'm somewhat satisfied with the result. I used the video linked below as tutorial. My first time without a line drawing as a guide. This will be part of a series; I wonder if anyone will recognize what I'm going for? It'll hopefully be obvious when I finish more in the series.

    Ever since my son had a seizure at an event and they called the paramedics, he refuses to be left alone anywhere in fear it’ll happen again.

    So here I am sitting outside a drop off birthday party, because that was the only way he’d agree to go.

    I just installed a new Level lock, which is pretty sweet. There are lots of options for controlling it: The Level app, Home Keys, NFC key card, wireless keypad, Alexa, and of course a plain old key on a keychain.

    I didn’t realize until after that sharing Apple Home Keys with other users requires a a HomeKit hub. So… I just ordered a HomePod mini. (1/3)

    I'm proud of myself.

    Work is having an event tonight to which I brought husband and kids to the first part. I chose to come home with them to take my part in the bedtime routine, and I've managed to get myself out the door again to rejoin the party!

    I don't get out much lately and work has become my local social life. There's another discussion about how healthy that is, but I'm glad I'm not just staying home and stewing. I easily could, I'm perpetuatired as ever, but it's nice to get out.

    And yes, I absolutely know most of these will never happen. Still wanna wish and hear from others.

    • Bitwarden (and system-wide copy/paste)
    • Reminders, Calendar
    • iMessage, Apple Photos, Apple Music
    • Mastodon

    Disappointingly, most PWAs out there are not installable on the Quest 3. They have to do a bit of extra work for the Quest browser to allow them to be installed.

    Really, I wish it supported installing any regular PWA.

    If anyone sees this list and thinks "you should have gotten a Vision Pro instead," to you I say:

    Correct. But money.

    And, importantly, I think the Quest 3 is better for sharing VR with other people. It's not as tied to a single individual as the Vision Pro is.

    I've used the #Quest3 #VR headset for a week now. Most reviews are spot-on: it's fun, immersive, and useful. But:

    • When I'm using #ImmersedVR or Workrooms and a big 130W charger, the battery still drains. Do I specifically need a 40W charger??
    • So many boundary adjustments. Thankfully, quick.
    • Nose gap is a bit more noticeable than I thought it'd be.
    • I'd like to make my avatar smile. How??
    • For me, the stock headstrap is actually surprisingly good.
    • I really want to try a Vision Pro now.

    This week I was helping out a client (side work) and they sent me an ssh private key to an ec2 instance, unencrypted over email 💀

    They have been so good to work with, but they are not interested in anything beyond the agreed scope of work, and it’s killing me to not be able to help them further.

    tylermumford,
    @tylermumford@mas.to avatar

    @kjg 😳 Oh my.

    f, to random

    I wasn't going to buy an Apple Vision Pro for many reasons. But I did buy the Quest 3 this week and it's got multiple improvements over the Quest 2.

    I like the Quest 3 and think that objectively, it probably works better than AVP for a lot of scenarios.

    Plus, it's cheaper 😛

    Then, Karl Guttag came out with this post today:
    https://kguttag.com/2024/03/01/apple-vision-pros-optics-blurrier-lower-contrast-than-meta-quest-3/

    Vindication, or confirmation bias? 😀

    Whatever the case, both my wife (who found the Quest 2 hard to use) and I found that the Quest 3 was much easier to use (lighter and fits better and easier to put on/remove) and the best movie watching experience we’ve had in AR/VR so far …

    I also found that the Quest 3 works beautifully with glasses. Compare that to AVP which won’t work with glasses at all.

    tylermumford,
    @tylermumford@mas.to avatar

    @f Same experience here. 🙂

    tylermumford,
    @tylermumford@mas.to avatar

    @f I’ve done a bit of gaming on it, maybe 5-10 hours. I only felt discomfort once, and I was able to easily revert the comfort setting that I was experimenting with and haven’t felt it since. (It was in a shooter game, and I was trying to turn around IRL as fast as I could.)

    I think most games have effective comfort settings these days.

    Games look gorgeous on this headset when they’ve been optimized for it. If they’re only optimized for Quest 2, they look fine.

    My word @jordibruin is a wizard. I just tried out their new SplitScreen app (which adds an extra monitor to Mac Virtual Display on visionOS) and it worked wonderfully for me.

    So now I can have my preferred multi-mac setup of a main monitor in front of me and a second, "utility" display on the left and side with docs or notes.

    @dan613 Have you tried Immersed or Horizon Workrooms? I’ve used Immersed to do this (multiple virtual monitors) on Mac, and both apps work well for it on Windows.

    (I’m using an M2 MacBook Air and a Quest 3.)
