Update on SwiftGodot and strict concurrency.

The easy stuff is gone, but the remaining stuff is hard. I could brute force my way to the end, but goal is not to just have it build, I want to make sure that my users can rely on the guarantees and be able to benefit from this additional level of safety.

So the next step will take some time to complete, as many of these will require some research into some Godot features.

@v1sea@mastodon.social avatar

@Migueldeicaza It is open source right? I've been meaning to learn more about Godot for cross platform XR development.

if HTTP was so good why didn't they make HTTP 2

v1sea,
@v1sea@mastodon.social avatar

@whitequark Have you ever seen a packet in real life. I didn't think so.

v1sea,
@v1sea@mastodon.social avatar

@whitequark TCP actually stands for Tube Canister Protocol, but the IETF won't tell the public that.

There is an interesting article titled "Please Don’t Share Our Links on Mastodon: Here’s Why!" about the startling load that Mastodon's mass-distributed link preview generation has on small independent webservers. But I cannot link it to you, because of a reason

v1sea,
@v1sea@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc The federated live feed downloads around 1MB/s with previews enabled.

If building apps that sync to iCloud has taught me anything…

…it's that I don't want to build apps that sync to iCloud 😂

@stroughtonsmith Sync might be too strong of a word.

Today I saw both a sunrise and a sunset.

I wonder if my life would be happier if I just lived in a place with more windows

v1sea,
@v1sea@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc I started working on a program that would calculate the light an apartment would get throughout the year. There was a research paper on the effect of sunlight on property value in Shanghai that might be relevant. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/366156838_IMPACT_OF_ACCESS_TO_SUNLIGHT_ON_RESIDENTIAL_PROPERTY_VALUES_AN_EMPIRICAL_ANALYSIS_OF_THE_HOUSING_MARKET_IN_SHANGHAI

If I have a JSON API that's protected by "Authorization: Bearer XXX" API tokens, what are the arguments against sticking these headers on it?

Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *
Access-Control-Allow-Methods: GET, POST
Access-Control-Allow-Headers: Authorization

I want users of my API to be able to access it via JavaScript from any host

The best argument I can think of is that it may encourage people to leak their private API token in publicly visible HTML documents, anything else?

v1sea,
@v1sea@mastodon.social avatar

@simon When you say anywhere, do you also want to support a local html file? If someone does leak their token is there a simple way to revoke it?

@ianRobinson @aburtch @Daojoan In five years it will come to light that there is a massive corpus of 8th grade essays that comprise 80% of the OpenAI training data.

@ianRobinson @aburtch @Daojoan gpt4 has been really nice for finding the specific search terms to use for finding academic papers on niche algorithms. How are you finding Gemini compared to gpt4?

@Migueldeicaza That is pretty wild. Do they use an external keyboard?

I picked up a 3D printer because my kids had shown a lot of interest in one and I had some ideas for projects I wanted to use one for.

Was nervous about how fiddly everyone made it sound, so I was pleasantly surprised when the first print went perfectly! Second one too. Third had a very minor adhesion problem, but didn't ruin the print...

I've now tried to print a fourth object 6 times and have yet to make it past the second layer successfully. 😭

v1sea,
@v1sea@mastodon.social avatar

@tojiro Can you post a photo of the print failure? What material are you printing with?

@thisismissem Do you think the broader fediverse would accept or reject an instance with a route that showed the ActivityPub messages passing between systems in a live 3d display?

I think it would be a fun visualization to build.

v1sea,
@v1sea@mastodon.social avatar

@thisismissem Agreed. At a high level the goal is to visualize the interconnections between instances. It would be really neat to see the public posts flow between them. Maybe the favorites and boosts too.

I'm thinking about taking an explicit allow list approach to the message filtering.

I swear, so much complexity of my life right now comes from me wanting to be able to graphically draw out an interconnected hypergraph but also have a convenient textual representation of said hypergraph

I'm sure this makes zero sense to people. But ugh. It's so frustrating to have the ideas in your brain and just not be able to really tease them out in a useful way for others

Signed,
trying to figure out how to map "do the platform engineering thing more better" into strategy and architecture

v1sea,
@v1sea@mastodon.social avatar

@hazelweakly Why a hypergraph and not a basic graph? I wonder if an 3d/AR visualization of these graphs would be beneficial.

v1sea,
@v1sea@mastodon.social avatar

@hazelweakly Interesting. Do you have any good references for applying hypergraphs to problems or visualizations of hypergraphs you found helpful?

This 2023 paper looks promising for the visualization aspect. https://arxiv.org/abs/2308.05043

Whenever I see a news article with an isometric illustration my first reaction is “I’d love to play that game”. In this case I’m imagining rushing to apply surreal repairs (plasters, rubber bands, duct tape) to a miniaturised rail network while the trains are still running on it.

v1sea,
@v1sea@mastodon.social avatar

@kate This is a neat idea, do you mind if I try to use it?
