@futuresprog I've said often enough that trees are a great climate solution. But you have to keep growing new ones, keep carbonizing them for energy, and bury the carbon.

The issue with battery-powered long-distance air travel is that you have to lug weight of those batteries with you for the entire trip.

The whole problem would be considerably more tractable if airliners could do as rockets do---jettison exhausted fuel storage as they go, especially since maximum power requirement is at takeoff. We've done the math and it absolutely works, we use our support drones to catch and reuse the jettisoned batteries.

Well, most of the time. Sorry about your cow; we'll get you a new one.

@Unixbigot Wait a minute! Suppose two aircraft carried an extra battery together?

Hmm, something fishy going on with our solar power. If you look around 12pm it would appear, for reasons I do not understand, that we are exporting our power to the grid at $0.13, and then buying it back at $0.29

@craftygardennz I've only just twigged. Our web control panel showed zero feed-in, and I thought that suspicious so I checked.

@zl2tod What happened with the Solax in the end? Is there some magic phrase I need to mention to someone?

Next project is a 15 tonne water tank level monitor. So, your thoughts:

@fishidwardrobe
It's for a tank. So it has to be heavily armoured with a garden shed welded on top ...

Farmgeek did one with ultrasonics a few years back. Seemed to work for a couple of years at least. I'm more concerned about the buildup of spider webs - that's what killed the old greenhouse electronics. Ironically the dodgy homebrew conductivity probes survived intact!

As in an elephant being a milspec mouse? I have been known to slightly over-engineer things sometimes (see Arduino-activated 5kg Rat Flattener project, and yes it would flatten a 5kg rodent).

@rogerparkinson I have 05's which don't seem to work at 3V3 but I know a place I can swap some over tomorrow. I may just stick multiple options on the same device. Belt & braces.

I wondered if I might be able to get a better idea of Micron probe height if I used a laser for illumination. Turns out not, but it looked frickin' rad. You can see the flecks of annoying dust on the slide clearly.

The Great Network Changeover is complete. I created a dummy device on a Pi Pico to test, then went for it. With , I changed the SSID/pw in "Secrets", made sure there were backup AP's, and for the Athom plugs just connected direct to their AP and edited it. I lost some ESPhome devices but verifying and reinstalling the configs got them back. On a subsequent firmware upgrade one of the switches went off by default instead of on - something to check in the future.

Been using the GoSungrow addon for , and iSolarCloud just booted me off. I have a new password and am back on again. Might have to look at extracting the data locally (which frankly is a much better idea anyway).

Does anyone have details on what caused ? Other than (fairly obviously) the Bing API died, there don't seem to be details. Not on The Verge, Arstechnica, Slashdot, just op-eds on search engine monocultures.

Modest proposal.

Bring back the corporate death penalty. Use it for things like ecocide, gross pollution, and wage theft.

Liquidate and give the proceeds to those who were wronged.

vik,
@vik@mastodon.nzoss.nz avatar

@phil_stevens Suggestion: Before doing that, get the replacement infrastructure in place or things go bollocks-shaped pretty quickly and inequitably.
