I carry a small nail clipper on my key chain that has seen more of those than actual nails.

You want to work in IT not in fast food, so move that to the top.

Also, sort them properly - descending order is the default. You can go by ascending since they are reasonably close together, but don’t jumble the dates randomly.

Remove diminishing adjectives. “Obsolete” desktop. “Simple” firewall. “Simple” math game.

Why? You set it up on a home server. You configured a firewall. You developed a math game.

There’s also no need to mention that you set up AD to simulate a company environment. You set up an active directory environment with 3 nodes. Full stop.

[Meta] What do you think of migrating to c/map_enthusiasts@sopuli.xyz?

What do the users in this community think about possibly migrating over to !map_enthusiasts and locking this community? While there’s nothing wrong with having multiple communities for a topic, I feel like a consolidated community would be more fun and possibly get more overall engagement. And !mapporn is clearly the quieter...

The admins made very clear that they don’t tolerate locked communities and will remove mods and assign it to somebody new. So by all means you can suggest people to move elsewhere, but you won’t be having much fun in trying to force them.

Have you been in China during the pandemic? No? Then shut the fuck up, kindly.

Lemmy is just as political as reddit, just on the opposite spectrum. But yeah at least the memes stay in the meme communities, which I’ve all blocked. So that is nice, at the very least.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

No idea, but I sure ain’t sad about it.

MIUI is sort of a homebrew OS broadly based on Android. Some things work, others don’t. I wouldn’t be surprised if Xiaomi and OPPO will eventually go the way of Huaweii and develop their own custom OS to lock users into their ecosystem. It’s a China thing.

And while I’m a big fan of Xiaomi products in general, I wouldn’t use any of their phones without flashing the EU ROM first to ensure compatibility with free market tech. If you’re willing to give that a try, the folks at xiaomi.eu are working hard to maintain compatibility.

Can’t represent the users adequately if you’re not one of them.

Take it as a badge of honor. All clowns over there… First instance I blocked, and it reduced the toxicity on Lemmy by 70% on the spot.

They have a good reputation and quality lecturers. Can’t vouch for that particular course, but overall they are a good choice.

I have a 4k TV and don’t get it either. Watched the odd video in 4k and the colors are maybe a bit crisper, but that’s about it. I’d have to compare movies side by side to actually spot the difference.

Not worth it IMHO.

Can’t tell for screens though, I don’t even know whether mine does 4k or not. Was part of the home-office package from my company. I’ll have to check that tomorrow, only returning from a business trip tonight.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Mine is 65" and I really can’t, unless I switch between files rapidly. 720p to 1080p, definitely. But larger, hardly.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

I’d say about 2.5 meters, maybe 3.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

I just did during my annual checkup 2 weeks ago shortly after turning 40, still got 20/20 vision. No idea then…

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Maybe my TV is due for an upgrade then. Or the source movies I tried were 4k in name only but just some upscaled older ones… I’ll do some more testing with more recent ones.

I see, thanks a lot! I don’t have any devices that read physical discs, so it’s been streaming and alternatively sourced content exclusively. I don’t actually mind paying for media, but living in China significantly limits my access to unaltered, genuine discs that come with English audio tracks, unfortunately.

I’ll see if I can get my hands on a full sized LOTR copy for testing purposes then. Thanks a lot for the lengthy response, much appreciated!

After announcing increased prices, Spotify to Pay Songwriters About $150 Million Less Next Year (www.billboard.com)

When Bloomberg reported that Spotify would be upping the cost of its premium subscription from $9.99 to $10.99, and including 15 hours of audiobooks per month in the U.S., the change sounded like a win for songwriters and publishers. Higher subscription prices typically equate to a bump in U.S. mechanical royalties — but not...

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Yeah I’m done with spotify.

Back when it was a fiver, I could get the appeal and had a subscription myself.

At 11 bucks it comes at the price of a CD per month, every month. I didn’t buy that much music annually, ever. So right now we are entering a territory where streaming is exceeding the price of my regular music consumption patterns. I’ll go back to buying physical media and torrenting whatever old stuff is no longer available and can’t be found on ebay.

Fuck 'em with a cactus.

viking,

I do the same with youtube and adblock, so I guess that qualifies.

The most popular VPN in China is called Astrill, and since vpn’s and related discussions are forbidden, we refer to it as Ass Drill in messengers.

viking,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

That’s not a universal truth, there are a bunch of neo-nazi anthems and xenophobic songs banned in several countries, and for good reason.

viking, (edited )
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

I have no knowledge about songs being banned in the US or not, but I disagree with your assessment of laws being a waste of time. I’m not if favor of a police state whatsoever, but I would consider attending concerts of some right-wing rock bands as a first step towards radicalization.

Hence, preventing those from occurring where possible might keep gullible people out of the influence of radicals, or in the worst case, help keeping tabs on potential future offenders by being able to charge them with something.

According to a test conducted by the source below, they max out at 108.3 db, so I guess the claimants are full of shit.

Wait, I’m in HK right now for business and can open it just fine from my hotel wifi. The website that is, I don’t care about the platform and wouldn’t use the app.

I could play videos just fine without login though. Anything I’m missing?

Bei mir waren sie auch mit Abstand vorne. 77%, danach irgendwelche no-name Parteien, und dann SPD knapp vor der CDU. Sachen gibt’s.
