My personal crusade against the "minimized keyboard accessory" control for iPadOS continues.

Today's example: I wanted to create a new folder in the Notes app, but I couldn't because that thing was covering the button. 😡

Nearly two months later, and because of the glitchy 'iPad minimized keyboard accessory' thing, I still cannot add dates to my reminders with natural language input. Among other issues.

Yes, I filed feedback two months ago. (See above.) I'm guessing it will probably ship like this, completely broken. 🤷‍♂️

While we're at it: none of ~20 Feedback items I filed in this beta cycle have been officially addressed (but I was privately told they're appreciated), and widgets – the core feature of iOS 17 – are still losing their configuration on the Home Screen every few days for me.

I like iOS 17 a lot, and I understand Apple is swamped with the Vision Pro, but it feels like this whole beta > Feedback > beta process needs to be fundamentally rethought.

Back from my break for a few days with a hot take:

All email apps for iOS/iPadOS mostly suck in some way or another (poor native UI; lack of integrations; lackluster search). Yes I have tried them all.

Mimestream for Mac is the only good, modern email client for Apple users and it can't come soon enough to iPhone and iPad.

One of the many mysteries of HomeKit, still not fixed in iOS 17:

I have a water control device for my irrigation system. I can activate it just fine from the Home app or Control Center.

However, the device cannot be added to a scene, automation, or controlled from Shortcuts.

This doesn't make any sense.

viticci,
@viticci@macstories.net avatar

@wimleers Wrong. They are literally HomeKit accessories and I can also control them from the Eve and Home+ apps.

My hometown of Viterbo, Italy, has an annual religious celebration called 'Macchina di Santa Rosa' in which 100+ men carry on their shoulders a 30-meter-high tower through the narrow streets of a medieval town center. It weighs 5 tons.

It's such an incredible sight every time; it's truly breathtaking. This year we were lucky enough to have two friends with us who'd never seen it before. I love coming back to Viterbo for this every year.

Are you making some really cool interactive widgets for iOS 17? I could use more examples for my iOS 17 review and coverage on @macstories next month.

In @club MacStories Weekly today, I wrote about how purchasing a light strip for my balcony turned into...something else.

(If anyone has tips for what I wrote about regarding this light strip and HomeKit, please do let me know. I already know I'm going to waste several hours in Homebridge.)

If the Home widget can show up to four buttons at once in the small size in iOS 17, why shouldn't the Shortcuts one do the same?

Got in my car this morning and drove for 10 seconds before everything started beeping. Completely flat tire.

Called for an on-site repair, tire is now okay, and the guy is like, here's a little gift for you.

Pro tip: if you hear a ticking sound when driving, check your tires carefully 😅

On the way to discussing modern bookmarking apps, @viticci and I get philosophical about what bookmarking is in 2023 on @appstories. It's a fun conversation about collecting the web…

Also recommended is the latest Installer newsletter from @davidpierce, which coincidentally covers many of the same apps and topics as this week's episode of AppStories.

Screens 5 will feature a brand new (and undisclosed) icon from @matthewskiles 😀

Stay tuned!

Wow! @viticci chose violence against old people this week. “If you’re turning 50 and want to stop listening to the show, it’s fine.” “I’ll reactivate Facebook with my boomer friends before I go back to Twitter.”

Should I be offended? (Read that in your best Chandler Bing voice.) 👴🏼

@viticci Can I just say, your command of English blows my mind. As someone who also speaks a second language fluently (French), I understand how hard (nay, impossible) it is to be perfectly idiomatic.

I am amazed at how idiomatic your English is on Connected. You never make mistakes with verb tenses or (perhaps more impressively) prepositions. And you seemingly never translate Italian idioms into English.

I hope your cohosts realize how impressive and rare this is.
