MacPad M1 Air edition has been setup!! $300 for a MacBook Air M1 with a busted screen but pristine computer body - damn @viticci this is pretty wonderful - can’t wait to start exploring the ways I can integrate macOS with the iPad and Apple Vision Pro - this is my first Mac since my 2011 11” MacBook Air that still happily runs High Sierra - feels very sturdy maybe the thicker wedge end is a feature for using it with the old M1 XDR iPad Pro - supporting more weight

This. I don’t even have that many betas on TestFlight, but it often fails to load on my Mac, just to name one of the issues. https://mastodon.macstories.net/@johnvoorhees/112474709438572211

I turned the new 13" iPad Pro into a MacPad as well as a portable gaming display.

macOS on OLED is amazing. And for streaming PC games, this is the best device I've ever tested.

This is why I love the iPad's hardware modularity so much. My story: https://www.macstories.net/stories/i-turned-the-new-13-ipad-pro-into-a-macpad-and-portable-gaming-display/

A year ago, TestFlight barely worked for me, and eventually, it broke completely on macOS.

Apple patched it up, so that it's useable again even with a large beta collection, but the app has been left to languish for too long given how important it is to developers.

Some suggestions on what should be done on @macstories:

"The iPad Pro doesn’t need to run macOS, but the answer to why an iPad Pro can’t do something a Mac can do, shouldn’t be to carry two kinds of computers with the same M-series chips, with the same RAM, with the same storage, and do different things on each.”

Sold my old 11" iPad Pro to a friend and LITERALLY the first issue she had was with the Files app. 🫠

But no, it's just nerds who want macOS on iPad.

@viticci Regular people need a functioning file manager, who would've thought 🤪

Apple has accomplished one thing with the Files app: it’s made people a lot less critical of the Finder.

Having read and watched through all the iPad coverage, it really seems like a lot of people are aligned on the top items where iPad falls down

• The Files app infrastructure
• The too-restrictive audio system
• Background processing
• Multiple user support

"Just put macOS on it” is the fallback for most criticism, because it's hard to articulate just why iPadOS doesn’t cut it. And the "Where's the Calculator?” discourse isn't about a calculator app, it's about the missing apps of the core OS

If you've ever been curious what happened to the rumored 'TextEdit for iOS' from way back — it worked, it was likely somebody's pet project to test certain APIs and never intended for release, and it's barely more than a UlTextView w/ Files support. It might still be included in AppleInternal versions of the OS, today.

I'm with @viticci: I would love a fully-functioning TextEdit for iOS

Action sheet in TextEdit: New Document, New From Template, Browse
Sample document in TextEdit. It tests various RTF styles, weights and tables. The toolbar has a back button, a link icon, a search icon, an info icon and a folder icon — meanings forgotten
